Title: valve guides?
Post by: trailtracker on August 24, 2005, 06:14:02 AM
my 95 16valve manual tranny tracker is  blowing blue smoke, but only when i first start it or its sitting at idle. going down the road, the engine runs fine  and seems to burn very little oil. from doing searches on this site i have come to the conclusion that it would be the valve guides. how much does a shop charge to replace these? and is it worth doing on a rebuilt motor with 80,000 miles? or should the whole motor be rebuilt? has anyone had this done, and how much is a good estimate for cost? thanks

Have your

Compression checked, if it is good and it is only giving the puff of blue on start up or extended idle it is probly the valve seals. These can be changed without removing the head and will likely solve the problem.
My wifes is doing the same thing (92 4dr) and if I wasn't going to be swapping to the 2.0L I would just be changing the seals.
