Like the title says. Were leaving for a 2200 mile trip next week and noticed last night that 3 tires are almost bald (crappy stock tires).
Anyways anyone know what will fit: 235/70-16's or 225/75-16's on a stock 04 XL7? I'll be purchasing the 1.5" spacer lift next month but I need tires now and don't wanna waste the $$$. Appreciate any feedback ASAP.

Go to Walmart.com   http://www.walmart.com/tires?path=0%3A91083
Put in the size you need.
A big list pops up, including BF Goodrich A/T's amd M/T's.

with the spacers, ive put on 235/70/16 Yokohama geolander AT IIs they are sweet but before that i had on 225/70/16 Pirellis scorpian ATs which are also very good.
I got the geolanders for about $80 a tire plus install
I got the Pirellis for about $85 a tire plus install.
around $550 total with spare.
If you go off road they both work but the Yoks rub a bit, didnt stop me in Moab at any point though.. so either are great tires. Make Discount tire match Tire rack price, saves a ton on the tires.

I forgot to add this to the last post. The site is great to get an idea of tire size and the difference it will make on your ride.

Thanks guys...
With your responses and with what's in the forum now I decided 225/70-16's would work. Got them from tire rack (Yoko Geo's) for $73 each shipped. I'll get some B4 and After pics done next week and add them to forum for search functions. Hopefully they'll work just as well as Tire rack dictates they will. Tired of Hydroplaning...
Looks like nearly a 1.5" tire size increase and with luck they won't rub and look OK on the rig.
Plan was to upgrade to 235/65-17's with a 1.5" lift... But $$ ran out so... I went with the reasonable choice.
Wanted to save the 16" rims for the sami I plan on buying (making #6 on the Suzuki vehicles owned list...). Wife didn't agree...

On my XL-7 and wife's GV stock is 235/60-16, but 235/70-16 work good without any spacers. I took BFG A/T.
After Calmini lift I took 245/75-16, but there were big problems with turning of wront wheels :-[... You need to move ball joints about 1" to the front and make some more.. Are you crasy like me?;D

Someone needs to contact Suzuki about using 225/70-16's on as stock. Man it looks SO MUCH better. No rubbing what so ever, looks like it's OEM. Difference between this and old tires was about 1.75" overall. Defenitly stands the SUV part now, not a minivan.
Making the 2200 mile trip this coming week. Will report if any MPG loss as well as a pic when I get back.
-
Ok, no pics yet... But gas mileage was horrible! Could be the extra weight I had, or the tires... But 19.75 down, 21mpg back. Big drop from last years 24mpg average. I honestly think it was the gasoline formulation, smelled really rich in additives. No difference in city/hwy though which was wierd.
Added in for the tire difference.

"On my XL-7 and wife's GV stock is 235/60-16, but 235/70-16 work good without any spacers. I took BFG A/T."
Is this true? I have an 05 xl7 and desperately need to upgrade, are you saying if I go to BFG A/T 235/70/R16 without spacers, they will not rub? anxious for reply. thx

I just ordered BFG A/T KO'S, 225/70/16 for my 02 Grand Vitara. It looks like they'll fit.
I do expect a big drop in fuel economy. The new tires are about 10lb more each, and that makes a huge difference in accelerating rotational mass, versus throwing 50 lbs in the back of the car.
I'll let you know on the weekend how it goes.

The 225/70/16's worked out great! We were very carefull about making sure nothing will rub. There was about 1/2" to the frame on the front, full lock to lock, and about 3/4" to the front well plastic underguards, behind the bumper.
These tires lifted the car about 1" or more over the crappy free tiger paws I got last year. The front wells filled out perfectly, the rears look a little tight. If not planning any off road or future lifting, I think I would recommend the 215/70/16's, which they also offer.
The tires are amazingly quiet, very little noise increase, and it is not a droning noise, better described as a hum.
I am very happy with these new tires.

I read the board and just put some 225/70/16's on my 2001 XL7 and they work fine and look alot better than the stock tires. Definately makes it look more like a truck.

An update on the BFG AT KO 225/70/16's on 2002 Grand Vitara:
Great tires on the freeway, cut through snow ruts (when changing lanes on snow covered freeway) unlike anything I've ever had on this vehicle. Haven't seen heavy snow yet, or ice.
They rubbed in the back with 4 people on a smooth, deep dip at about 70 kmh. I will get taller bump stops or something, I haven't looked underneath yet.
Again, recommend the 215/70/16 if not lifting.

must be the BFG's are closer to their real size as the Pirelli Scorpion A/T in 225/70/16 never rubbed once. loaded or not.

The BFG All Terrains are a LT (light truck) tire. This probably makes it a lot bigger.
The XL& also has more room back there I think?

Yes the xl-7 does have room but this was when I had a GV.

Hi all, since I don't play in the mud I went to a snow/ice combo. I just put on the Dunlop Grandtrek sj6 215/70's on my 05 xl7. They added overall about 1 inch to the diameter, and we feel the CG has not been noticably comprimized. It looks more truck like and I also feel that any larger may look awkward in the wheel well. I am convinced that a 235/70 will rub, a 225/70 would be iffy, depending on the tire. I too feel that this size is the best choise. From experience, I will give the blizzak a slight edge on ice, but at $130 canadian vs. $198, the dunlop is a better buy. cheers.. ;D

nasty from brisbane australia i am running BFG 245/70/16 A/T only rub on full lock

I don't know the exact difference between the XL7 and GV wheel wells but we just put High-Tec retreading's 225/75R16 muds on our stock height GV. They're very tall sitting right about 28.5", maybe a little more, on the vehicle at 25psi and this is really the biggest you could run without ripping stuff off as you drove down the road. They rub the front a bit on turns and the rear doesn't even have a finger width of space but so far no rubbing. That said our GV is pretty empty in the rear so if you jammed a couple hundred pounds in there it would likely start rubbing.
A lift is coming in a few weeks. ;D

Is that when flexing, or just sitting/driving normally?
-
Sitting normally, but again, these are BIG for their size.

bumping this up for any confirmations on 235-70-16 on XL7
will this size do fine with a 1"-1.5" lift?

I am running this size with NO lift on my GV. I cut some plastic to make it fit. You should be fine.
