Post by: derekj on August 29, 2005, 02:26:40 PM
i put 4 door calipers, rotors, and pads on my 2 door 91 kick. is it a good idea to replace the master also?

If your master is good, there is no need,
4 door brakes rock for stopping with big tires

I just did this swap a short time ago on mine also,  but I swapped the rears too. Did you know that the 2 door drum will almost fit inside the 4 door drum. ;D I'm loving the extra braking power with my 33's and the park brake cables are longer also so they have more room for flex.

Biker, what all did you have to swap? Drums, shoes, e-brake stuff and hardware, but what about the cylinders? You had to swap the backing plate, too, right?

I am about to do this swap too but I was let down by the guy who was supposed to sell me the fronts. Do I just need calipers, rotors and pads? Could I just use the calipers if I run the thicker swb pads and my existing rotors?

Get the rotors as there is a real difference in size plus they are vented. Mine are slotted too.

You will need the bracket that the caliper bolts
to also, you can get the front backing plates too,
that makes it a 100% bolt on swap, tho the old
plates can be tweeked with an adjustable wrench
to fit the 4 door calipers.

I didn't swap the rears, I have little info there.

For sure grab the caliper mounts for the front, I just gave the backing plate a slight trim with tin snips and all was good.
For the rear you want the complete backing plate with shoes and cylinder attached and the drums. I grabbed the P/B cables also as they were new on the donor, turns out they are longer also. A bonus I found by using 4door rear brakes is that you don't have to pull off the brake return spring to pull an axle either, one less thing to lose on a trail repair.
Another curious fact I came across doing this is that the 4door rear wheel cylinders are a smaller bore than the 2door ones but the shoes are much larger, probably about 50%. :o
All in all a swap well worth the time and it is all bolt on, no fabbing ;D
