Title: AIr intake improvements

 :) Ok I was looking under the hood of my 1990 Sidetrack and found a metal grate in the rubber part of the air intake, whats it for? Is it a muffler? Has anyone one removed it and if you did what were the results? It looks like it would slow air flow down or maybe streighten the air flow. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like you found the mesh to keep big objects from getting to the airfilter.

I wouldn't remove it, no real gain except big junk gets to your airfilter.

You pull a whole BUNCH of stuff off, and throw it away, when you put on a Safari Snorkel.

One of the parts is called a "boom bottle".  I suppose it quiets the intake, but it sure has a funny name!

This little grill is inbetween the air filter and the throttle body, I think I'll try to pull it and see what happens.

CAREFUL!!!  If that "little grille" happens to include your mass airflow sensor, and you damage it, you can kiss your engine operation goodbye!

No wires and its a 1.6 8v with  a throttle body so its not an air mass sensor.

Baloo, it's just plastic, smack it with a hammer
thru the rubber tube, it will break and you can
pull it out. All it does is keep big stuff out of the
intake, say you sucked the filter apart and part
of it wanted to follow the air, it would keep the
engine from eating it

I've crushed and removed mine for some time now, and nothing is wrong with mine. Sounds kind of nice under heavy throttle.

I wonder if removing it actually makes any difference in airflow, though...
