well the tranny type is a matter of opinion,   to shift or not to shift,  I prefer the manual, and i do believe that the auto is controlled bythe Computer, however you could grab a computer and tranny out of a totaled 91 2DR or 4DR and you should be able to do a conversion with a little wire running.

My 92 4 door had a 4 speed auto tranny with overdrive and it was computer controlled. I don't know what all you'd need to swap, but the 4 spped auto also has 5.12's in the diffs, the 3 speed autos usually run 4.62's and the manuals run 5.12's(again, usually)

You're right, 89-91 4 door manual transmission models did have 5.38's. I didn't know that and now have a better idea what to search for in the junkyard! LOL!(just searched on www.car-part.com )

If you could swap in the 3 speed auto from a 2 door that's used to 4.62's it would drive 31's really nicely with the 5.38's... ;) I think the 4 speed auto might be a more difficult swap than the 3 speed auto, it would need more wiring work. Plus gearing-wise it wouldn't gain you much...

<----- runs a '91 with a 3spd auto and 31's (and did the swap of 4.62's to 5.12's)

does great on the trails, and on the hwy tops around 65mph (climbing hills drops to around 50 mph). I think my engine is getting tired too so the hwy speeds are limited there I think.

5.38's would be just about perfect tho.

I like the slushbox (a bit of a pain in deep mud), but it can CRAWL :)

thanks guys for the input. so you think the over drive would be to much work ,and boggy?  that's whats nitros is for..lol i think i'd go with the three speed though.. althoug the four would be nice for highway trips.... i'm i no hurry ..most of the time( ::))

Yo
The three speed auto is not computer controlled and you could do the swap fairly easily.
But your gas mileage is going to go in the toilet as you lose the overdrive. 2dr or 4dr 8valve
trans will work fine. If I remember right you'll need
- Flexplate
- Trans and tcase with torque converter
- Front and rear driveshafts
- Kick down cable
- all the shifter stuff

The rest should be ok if memory serves.

It's still a big job though.

I just did this swap on my 91 2 door. The 3 spd auto is identical in length to the 5 spd std so no need to replace driveshafts. There is no wiring needed unless you want the nuetral safety switch working, all I did was hook up the vacuum line and a tranny cooler and drive. I run at 3800rpm at 100kph(60mph) with 5.12's and 33's

Which version of the auto did you swap out as maybe the newer ones are different but if you are swapping with a 3 spd auto they are the same. I even swapped t-cases between the two and reused my old driveshafts with no problems

the 4 spd auto (with the OD) are longer.

So if I'm swapping the 5 speed manual into my 4 door that had the 4 speed auto, I'll need to find the driveshafts from a 4 door with the 5 speed?

was that a four speed auto or three speed.. by the looks of your pics i'm assuming it's a four. cuz you swaped ecu's...

The 4 door had the 4 speed auto. The ECM was missing when I got the truck. I will be using the 8v and 5 speed from the Goblin(with the Goblin's ECM) in the 4 door frame.(unless I can find a good 3 speed auto to swap in) ;)

I figured I can use the Goblin's front driveshaft, but will I need to get the rear driveshaft from a 5 speed 4 door or would the shaft from the 4 speed auto still work?
