I just had a friend of mine give me a 91 Tracker 4x4, 5spd with 170K, I think. The 1.6 has a hell of a rap to it, sounds like a jack hammer, wrist pin maybe? Anyway I have a another friend with a 92 Sidekick with 130K who said I can have the engine, tranny and transfer case at no charge. Will this be a direct bolt on to my new Tracker? How hard of a swap is this? I'd also like to start slowly building it into a trail rig as money allows. I have a nice set of 31" BFG A/T's sitting in the basement. What is the least I could do to get them to fit? I guess I better start with the engine though, lol.

Welcome, sounds like a good start to a project.
The engines are all the same to 95, then they
went 16Valve, blocks are teh same, heads are
different.
Change the engine coolant sensor and the intake air
temp sensor, I have found different values on 2 different
intake manifolds I have, just keep the old sensors
with the old computer and you should be good.
a chhep way to get the 31s to fit would be a body lift,
around $150 if I remember from Calmini, they advertise
here, just click on their banner when you see it, or go to

Welcome to the forum
Wilds advise is as usual bang on, just do the swap!

Coil spacers and a body lift will get you 31's comfortably...

Coil spacers and some agressive trimming will let ya fit 31's :P

What size spacers and how much of a body lift should work? I don't want to wreck the CV's with too much of a spacer. I could always go a little smaller on tire size, but I have a nice set of 31's. Thanks for the replies.

1-1/2" spacers, strut mount flip(free, just costs labor) and longer rear shocks from say a Ford E-150 or Crown Victoria(early 90's) will take care of the suspension nicely without too much strain on the cv's and a 2" body lift will clear 31's on the right rims. For rims, you'd want something around 15x8", 5x5-1/2" bolt pattern and around 3-3/4" back spacing. For inexpensive coil spacers, check the garage sale forum... ;) ;D

I'm running 31x10.50x15's on my stock rims and all I've done is put 1.5 in spacers and did Heather & Nate's budget body lift. Only prob with the stock rims my front rubs the frame slightly at full turn and my rear wheels rub the inner wheel well at full articulation.
Here is what it looked like right after getting the tires on it.
