Title: Wich engine swap
Post by: dave on September 23, 2005, 02:22:06 PM
I'm driving a 1600 8V Vitara or Sidekick like you call it. But I want to puts some more horsepower in my car. I was thinking about swapping a bigger engine in it. The newer vitara engines (the 2l) are very rare in Belgium and very expensive. So what engine would fit a vitara gearbox (with some modifications) and is a little bit bigger, not to heavy and easy to find.... Who knows?  ;D

Possibly not all that common in Belgium and as far as I'm aware won't mate with the Vitara gearbox. Maybe the 2ltr V6, was that available in Belgium, we had them in the UK.

I guess it all depends on how much power you want and how much you are willing to spend.

I would suggest your options are

- Building up your exsisting engine for increased performance (stock is 80hp in Canada)
- Installing a 1.6/16v engine complete with injection and wiring  (stock is 95hp in Canada)
- Installing the 1.6/16v as above then modifying it for increased performance
- Installing the 1.8/16v with injection/wiring/custom Flywheel/mounts etc (stock was about
  120hp in Canada)
- Installing the 2.0/16v 4 cylinder as above (stock was 127hp in Canada)
- Installing the 2.0 6 cylinder as recommended by Rhinoman (never offered in Canada)

Or installing another drivetrain from a different vehicle.

You need to figure out
a) How much more power you want.
b) How much you want to spend.
c) How much you can do and how much you will need to pay to have done.

Once you have that figured out the selection will narrow quickly.

Good point...

But he was looking at something that would adapt to the stock trans....

Sure fits as an alternative driveline option though/

All the newer suzuki engines (2l 4cyl, V6 etc) are very rare to find so they are expensive. I would like to swap an engine wich is a bit older and common to find/ I was thinking about 120 à 140 h would be nice. But more is always welcome  ;D

A 4. V8 or V6 is a little bit to much I think. I 'm rather looking for a bigger 4cyl.

The DOHC Vauxhall/Opel 2ltr engine has been fitted in a few UK SJs, if you search out a complete 130SRI Cavalier or Astra (Ascona/?) you can pick them up pretty cheap these days.  I believe you need a Manta gearbox for rwd. The experts on this swap are on the Suzuki forum at difflock.com
