after reading some of the posts (particularly "toyota ifs, paging mr. hagen) i decided to swap my axles with that of toyota. i'm from philippines so the donnor here is a hilux.
my goals are to strengthen my axles, my 3rd member and to correct my final drive ratio. i already broke 4 aluminium housings and a cv so i guess its about time i do something. also with 5.83s no longer available, the hilux's 5.71s should do the trick.
i have some questions and i hope you gurus here can offer some advice. thank you guys in advance...
1. from what i gathered i will be using suzuki spindles together with the toyota axles and lockouts but the toyota lockouts doesnt quite fit into the suzuki spindle. what modifications should i do here?
2. the front assembly i got comes with automatic locking hubs. do i have to use manual locking hubs or will these do?
3. instead of hub spacers (since the axles are longer than the spindle), i might have the axles machined. are there any downside to this?
these are the questions for now. i hope to here from you guys soon. will also be posting some pics in the future. thanks.

Even if you have teh shafts machined down, you still have to deal with the issue of an adapter to bolt the hub onto the Trackick knuckle.
Talk to 37kicker, as I believe he's the guy who sold Bobzooki the spacers and various junk he neded to install Toyota CVs. Of course you're still gonna have to deal with making mounting bracketry for the Toyota diff, as his kit is just to put the shafts on a Trackick diff.
Over on the Pirate4x4.com forum there was a thread about someone swapping in the whole IFS drivetrain out of a Toy and into a Sidekick, but I can't find it right now.

was able to comunicate with that guy from pirate4x4. he only installed the toy diff (w/ suzuki axles). i believe i might be the first guy who's crazy enough to swap the whole drivetrain. ;D

Heh well let me know how it goes my plans, as soon as money allows will be swapping both axles from a 90 toy v-6 truck and using t-100 axles for added length and fabbing new a-arms and using the toy knuckels and brake components. Was hoping to get started this winter but when you get started on it keep us informed. ;D

I would go with stock manual or full time pucks save the cone lock out washers . the down side is when you break you need to have another one made. stan

toy axle mated onto the zuk hub...
there is a 4cm gap between the lockout and the hub. is it possible for someone to post a photo of the spacer?
also the toy lockout flange doesnt quite fit into the groove of the zuk spindle. is this critical? will manual lockouts solve this problem?

(toy spindle on left, escudo on right)
thanks guys...

took me 3 weeks to finish. got more power now on aspalt (5.71 ratio r&ps). will be testing off road soon... hehe hope everything holds up... ;D

Nice work, very impressive.

Nice job Barcus! I noticed one thing of concern. It could be the photo but it looks like the upper bracket on the rear axle could be a little under built. That upper bracket is under a lot of stress and if it breaks it could be very dangerous. Like I said it could just be the angle in the photo. I am really impressed how well that turned out. That toy front diff looks to fit pretty well. I love to see new Ideas come to life. Very nice.

I agree I built three different brackets on my rear axle before I made one strong enough very dangerous when they snap :o my second one snaped going up dickey-belle at Zuwharrie this past april we had a big mess on our hands but back at camp we welded up a new one with pieces of our ;Dtrailer ;D and its worked well so far
Nice work this is excactly what I'm doing to the Real Red Wagon I got my axles out of an 86' pickup let us know how it goes off road :D
-
thanks guys i really appreciate it. ill look into the bracket and c how to reinforce it.

Looks like a good Mod barcus. :) I got a couple of questions for you. What model Hilux did you get 5.71 diffs from? Year and engine type? With changing the rear stud pattern did you just drill 4 new holes in the axle or did it require building up with weld first? How did you weld to the cast diff centre for the rear A arm mount? Thanks :)
-
In Oz they were in an early Hi-Ace van, not in a Hilux.
-
the donnor axles came from a 92 hilux. got the r&ps from precision gear.
http://www.precisiongear.com/toyring.htm
for the rear axles, we did buildup 1st before we drilled new holes. on the drum though we just drilled the new holes because the face is to thin to buildup. ill see if i can get a photo of the studs without the drum.
the rear carrier of the hilux is made from cast iron so welding should not be problem. :D
-
CJ, I have seen Hi Ace vans with 5.28 (or something like that) But I wasn't aware that they also come out with a 5.7. Do you know what year model Hiace van?
Barcus, That would be great if you could show pics of the axle. I know cast Iron can be welded, but it is real difficult, it requires pre and post heating of the entire job and also require low hydrogen electrodes from what I can remember. :)
-
Northwestoffroad.com (http://Northwestoffroad.com) also sells 5.71 ring gears for the toy axles. They are richmonds if I'm not mistaken.

I'm no pro at this stuff, but my Norton Antivirus tells me a denial of service worm is on this page somewhere.

Its probably getting a bit overexcited about CJ's script. I've been probed by CJ, I feel so dirty now :o
-
You drive a 4wd so feeling dirty should feel right ;D
-
hey could you shoot a couple more pics of how the front diff fits in under the engine and how you mounted it. I have contemplated this swap for awhile jus to get a stronger toyota rearend.
