my 93 has a 3" calmini body lift with 33" mickey t's and complete camo-clad. i use it as my hunting rig, but actually drive it more than my truck. the moto has 188,000 miles and is tired. that coupled with the big tires makes it moan and groan. sooooooo, what are my options? could i put a newer bigger motor in? would a calmini motor re-build kit do it?
-
When my motor let loose at 280K after years of pulling 33's around. It made a HUGE difference just puting a rebuilt motor in it. You would be amazed at how much power is lost after lots of use.

sorry for the ignorance, but you reuilt the original motor, or put in a completely different RE_BUILT engine. someone had mentioned putting a newer 6 cyl in. is that possible?
-
is that possible?
Everything is possible ...
A stock engine rebuilt, should do ok with 33's ... it's never going to win drag races, but if ya want that, get another car.
-
what's the best and most affordable re-build kit?
-
could try rpmrons ...

-
Did you ever regear to turn the 33's?
-
no.
-
Is yours auto or manual?
The fact that you're turning 33" tires with gears originally ment for a set of 26-27" tires is probably part of the problem.
-
You could check out "do it yerself engine" thread
It's for an 1.6/8valve, but most it applies to the 16 valve (except obviously the head work).
Built similary you will get a power boost while you are at it.

I purchased an engine that had already been rebuilt.
Definately look into the re-gearing of the axles. It will help out allot.

it is a manual transmission. what gear ratio do i need to look at? do i need to do the gears before or after the engine rebuild, or does it matter?
-
i won't be doing in rock crawling. just mud and mostly normal driving

Power is not a substitute for gears.
You are working that engine hard
on 33s with stock gearing, problem
is the 5.83 have been hard to get
from being out of stock, anyone hear
if they are shipping yet ???
The gears will cost about $600 and
another $100-200 to have setup, you
could look into a diesel swap for power,
and I think it will help with the gear ratio
too, any thoughts on that guys ???

PM GRVIT and see if the European Distributor still has any of the 5.83's. If not the 5.12 manual gears will help out allot and cost much less. I dont know any thing about a motor swap besides the fact I like things simple and a diesel swap sounds like a long drawn out process just to have a bit more power and allot louder motor to go hunting with :-\ We do not allow any one to even drive up the field entrance in a diesel during hunting season because of all the extra noise.
Plus a Manual tranny diff swap will be lots cheaper and can be done in an afternoon.
my 2 cents,

Zig, you got too much on your mind these days ;)
He's got a Manual Trans already.
Get the gears, money well spent for torque

:P :-\ ::) :-[ :o Yea your right, manual, auto what's the difference, j/k. WOW i must be stressed, that is like the third time I have done something like that in the past week ::) I still would not do a deisel transplant into a hunting vehicle. ;)
Sterssed and finally lost it,

looked on trail tough products and saw the 4.9:1, 115% reduction transfer case gears. would these work for what i am needing. if you can't tell i don't know crap about mechanical stuff. i can't even change the oil.
-
FSM, and get a friend that is Mechanical if you are going to rebuild a motor, its not really hard if you follow a few simple rules, allways Mic everything twice to be sure its good Always replace bearings and seals, RTFM and then RTFM and ask lots of questions, lota ppl on here that are experianced. always use a torque wrench. and after you do one it gets pretty simple, however if your the type of guy that has parts left over from changeing the oil, buying a prebuilt motor is more expensive but it has a warrenty. and always rember the KISS solution ;D ;D
-
No, those T-case gears are for a Sammy
case, won't do you any good, unless you
get a Kicker3, but that's as much as a rebuild
-
There are a few options out there for a 4:1 T-case gear set, BUT, none of the Sidekick t-case reductions reduce the high range gearing. So it would help out ALLOT off road but you will still be very sluggish on the road.

why has calmini temp disc the 12 bolt gears?

Some supply thing between them and Richmond Gear (<--- was fabricating them) I think that Calmini is getting set up to make the gears themselves.

Just my Two Bits
With 188,000 miles gears come second to making sure the engine is in shape. Both are a chunk of money but if it don't run right the gear money is wasted.
Unless the engine has major problems you haven't mentioned all the parts to rebuild should be under $500.00. Plus machine work and any mods you do.
Then hit the net for a couple of 5.38:1 diffs from a 1991 SideKick 4dr. No it's not a perfect solution but you will have a good engine for another 100,000 and better gears.
