has anyone tried using the front strut lower monting point but making it into some sort of cradle to mount a shock and using a normal shock ....you know what I mean?
-
I do know what you mean but doubt if a normal shock would be strong enough. There are a lot of stresses going through the strut.
-
ok you know the 2 bolts at the hub and of the strut .
take that and creat a cradle type thingy that a normal shock would mount into thus have a longer travel but could you say a tj or sammi shock.....wish I could draw a picture of it .

I know what you mean but as Rhino said you'd need a fairly meaty shock and then a way to secure the bottom mounting part to it with out knacking the shock.
Welding is not really good idea as you would be welding a pressurized shock :o and trying to clamp some sort of bracket might collapse the housing too.
I have heard of guys welding to shocks before to make there own coil overs but you wouldn't catch me doing it !

Problem you'll run into is that the upper strut acts as a locater for the tire. You would need to intergrate an upper a-arm to add just a normal shock in place of the strut.

I was thinking an adjuster plate like the ricers have for camber adjustment....but this does sound like it would be alot of work tho.
