Title: Valve guide seal replacement
Post by: scoodie on October 05, 2005, 10:51:17 PM
My girlfriend has a '91 Escudo with a 1600cc G16a motor (so it says on the chassis plate) It looks to be a single cam but has 16 valves.

It's smoking quite badly on startup now and she really is getting annoyed with it.

I'm wondering how difficult it is to do the replacement, I have access to the compressed air spark plug to hold the valves up and a bar to hook under the cam for compressing the springs, I've never worked on one of these motors before and never replaced valve guide seals with head bolted on.

Any advice, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks

The bar to compress the valve springs
won't work on that head, but the springs
aren't that stiff, you should be able to
compress than with about 60 lbs pressure,
but you will need a tool with a open fork
shape on the end, angled 90* from the
push part, use a magnet to get the keepers
out, they fly if pinched between the retainer
and the valve stem.

Remove the old seals and push the new ones on

Good Luck
