I'm gonna change to Synthetic, but need to now how do I get as much of the old gear-oil out of 5spd trans in my 99 Tracker as possible. I don't want to mix it all together if I don't have too.

Isn't it just like any other oil removing thing, get the filler plug out and the other plug (don't know what it's called) put some sort of bucket under it and wait...... Untill nothing is flowing out anymore. You won't get all of it out but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

......... What he said, plus gear oil is cheap. You can always buy walmart brand and flush it out before you put the good stuff in.

Yeah, while a .44 Magnum will do a fair job of draining your juice, it's alot better to pull the fill plug, and the drain plug to get it out. When you do it, it will work best to have the vehicle level.
So, if you use ramps, use TWO SETS, and get all four tires off the ground.

Thanks, I wanted to know if it sould be level or tilted more than anything.
I looked a walmart but the only full synthitic gear-oil I found was for boats. I guess I need to go to AutoZone.

since we are on the topic.... I am going to change all the fluids diffs and transfer case .....roughly how much oil does each take so I can buy enough on one trip.
????? when running skid plates how do they mount since you do need to get the oil change areas at least once a year.

Front diff .....................1.1qts API GL-5 SAE 75W-90
or 80W-90 gear lube
Rear diff ......................2.3qts API GL-5 SAE 75W-90
or 80W-90 gear lube
Manual Tranny ............3.2pts API GL-5 SAE 75W-90
or 80W-90 gear lube
Transfer case...............3.6pts API GL-5 SAE 75W-90
or 80W-90 gear lube
Auto Tranny.................3.0qts Dextron II or III auto Tranny fluid

Went to Autozone and picked up Mobil 1 Syn gearlube.
Book calls for 75w-85 GL-4 in the trans but they didn't have any so I asked and they said that the 75w-90 GL-5 is ok to use. I hope thats right.

Called the Suzuki dealer about this very thing today and they said the same thing. Use 75w90 Synthetic, it's what they use in their shop.
Because Mom's is a Tracker I called the Chevy dealer and they quoted me $20.00 a quart for 75w85. ::)

Well I changed it and the old stuff was black and a little sparkley :( I figure it's got almost 80K on it so I'd change it. Glad I did.
But is there any eaiser way to fill it? I had a really hard time geting the bottle tiped up high enough to empty and not pour out on the floor too.

amazing what people do to their vehicles.....I got it and the clutch has never been adjusted and the tires never rotated......oh yeah they used 4x4 for real bad rain

Glad to be of service ;D I have one Haynes manual on my PC desk and one in the garage ;D
(thought I lost one and bought another)

When I change fluids engine or otherwise I always go for a drive and warm it up, you get more of the old fluids out and more of the bad stuff ( filings, sludge etc..)
Caution: if you drive to long the fluids will be extremely hot, that's right I speak from experiance (OUCH!) :-[
