Title: Turn signal issues
Post by: RJkick on October 12, 2005, 08:36:42 PM
I am currently fighting with my turn signals. ???

After my last off road trip my turn fuse keeps burning out.  I replaced it and it works fine until I start driving and then it burns out.  I replaced it and checked for shorts and could not find any.  I reset some wires so they would not touch anything and the turn signals worked while parked but as soon as I started driving it burned out again.  I am at a loss and have no turn signals.  My hazard flashers work fine all the time so I don't get it.   By the way the Chilton book sucks I couldn't find anything remotely referenced the turn signal circuit.

I also had a plug that went into the brake fluid resevoir that was unplugged, again no reference in the Chilton book.  I plugged it in and everything still seems to work, except my turn signals of course.

 Any help would be appreciated

Electrical problems are tough to diagnose over the internet. :P I'd remove all the bulbs, clean the sockets and clean all the grounds I could find. You said the fuse doesn't blow until you drive it, could the short be in the brake light wiring? Does it have wiring for a trailer?

I agree with TN_Tracker.  Clean all the bulbs and check all of your connections.  It can be very difficult to trace.  Usually something like that is a wire that is grounding out somewhere.  I would start from the very beginning and check the resistance of the wires with a meter.  If you bite it off in little chuncks, it will hopefully expose itself.   Until then, don't make any turns ;D

Good luck

if it is a trackick look behind the left tail light, there is a molex plug that can get corroded very easily. could also be in the turn signal switch.

derek

I'm hoping for a short somewhere. Not too costly to fix.   It is odd because they were fine until I went down a very rocky mountain road.  Now the current problem.

I'll keep you posted if I find it

Thanks for all the help thus far

Excellent advice everyone.

It never dawned on me that everything worked fine until I started the Kick and started driving.   Once I realized that the fuse would pop once I backed out and started driving and you suggested removing all the bulbs I took a more methodical approach.  Finally I tracked it down to blowing when I reversed out of the driveway.  Then the smirk of stupidity came over me and I realized that the fuse is marked turn/back

After all of that it turned out to be in the reverse lights.  I replaced the bulbs and am flashing everyone once more with bright lights
