Title: fuel pump fuse/relay????
Post by: Salice_q on March 07, 2005, 06:02:19 PM
I have a 89 tracker. There is no power getting to my fuel pump the pump itself is working.  In the book it says there is a fuel pump relay and fuse.  I can't find either.  Any help? Is it in with the regular fuses, fuse box or elsewhere? Any input would be appciated.

Thanx,
Jenny    :)

These are some online pics I loaded to my server
they could help to figure out if it's the relay or
the fuse

Hope this helps, I didn't find any info on the fuse,
but I think it's in the fuse block under the dash,
close to your left knee

thank you for that little hard to make out but I have the same book and they arn't where they say they are in the book.  But I do not have a cover for my fuse box.  Anybody know where a good picture of the cover is??

I have a cover, I looked today
and didn't see a fuse listed for
the fuel pump, that doesn't mean
that one of those fuses isn't in the
power supply circuit, it's just not
labled for it

I have shorted the relay before to
drain the fuel tank during my rebuild
4 years ago, you have to turn on the
ignition for it to pump tho

Also, open the pics in your browser,
not in another program, the detail is
much better

I'm running into a similar problem re-wiring the Tracker I just got. Does the fuel pump hot wire go straight from the relay to the pump, or does it route through the ECM along the way? Based off the voltage I'm getting, I suspect a bad relay...

Edit: well, after further digging around, I found the fuel pump relay. I determined that it's getting power in on the switched circut, but it's not sending any power out. The relay itself tests fine out of the vehicle, it switches on and off with 12 volt power applied to the coil terminals, but in the vehicle it's not getting the signal to switch on... Now I'm starting to suspect bad ECM. The fuse must be good if the switched side is getting 12 volt power in, right? I'm about ready to wire in a switch to turn on the pump...

I searched on the subject of ECM and came up with the most common failure of the ECM is to loose signal to the fuel pump or the injectors. Hmmm... sounds like my problem... I also saw a post by Whitfield that said something about the main relay right beside the fuel pump relay and that I should get a click out of each one when turning on the key. I don't get a click out of either one. So is it a bad ECM or am I missing something else here? If the trucklet seems to run fine when getting fuel, wont wiring the pump up to a switch work fine then?

we got salice's fixed, turned out the wire to the pump was cracked some where, threw a new wire in and it runs better then ever... bit of a strange thing to happen, but meh

The ECM does give a signal to the
pump, it will shut off the pump about
3 seconds after the engine stops running,
such as in event of an engine stalling or
a failed start attempt

Do you think I would be fine just wiring in a switch? That way I could shut down the fuel pump myself in the event of an emergency... Bring the power to the switch from an ignition switched source so the key would also shut it down... Would work in theory at least...

The ECU fuel pump shut off
is a saftey measure, as far
as running it would run fine

I understand that the ECU also controls the power to the FI, right? So as long as the damage to my ECM is limited to the fuel pump power supply and the FI runs fine, I should be alright with just a switch to turn on the pump, but if the tracker doesn't run right, then I would suspect the injector control in the ECM is fried, too and I would need a new ECM... Right?

Also I read that the relay beside the fuel pump relay is the "Main" relay and that it should click with the key on as well as the fuel pump relay. What does this control? I'm wondering because that relay doesn't get signal either...

You must have a blown fuse or a broken wire, the power relay turns on the ecm and your fuel pump will not run with out that relay working first.

Well, first of all the ECM is the fuel
injection. I would take a look at the ignition
switch too, just to make sure you don't have
a worn contact that is causing all your grief,
I wore mine out, had to "remanufacture" it  ;)

Every fuse I've found has tested out fine. When I turn the key to "on" all the idiot lights are lit up and I hear a couple clicks from under the hood, as well as a couple of relays near the ECM, but the supposed "main" relay and the fuel pump relay aren't getting the signal to turn on...

The ECM turns on the main relay. Have you tested the relay itself? Without that switching not a lot is going to happen, the main relay supplies power to the fuel pump relay amonst other things. The ECU switches on the ground side so you won't see any power coming from the ECU. My FSM shows a seperate fuse between the ignition switch and the main relay coil as well as a fuse between the battery/ignition switch and the main relay contacts that switch power to the fule pump relay.

I tested all the relays and they all work fine outside the trucklet.

Some good news in all of this though: A tech at ECM to go asked me to get the numbers off the ECM and even advised that I could pull it out and check the board for damage. When I crawled under the dash to get the numbers, I couldn't find the factory stickers where they were supposed to be, so I pulled the unit out. When I pulled it, I found warranty seals holding the case shut and a company logo sticker for SIA Electronics. I searched for their website online and found a customer service toll free number and called it. The tech had me read her the numbers on their sticker and I found out it was still under warranty! WOOHOO! So now I'm sending it back in to them to be bench tested and repaired if needed under warranty. When it comes back, I'll know for sure that the ECM is good. Then if the trucklet still doesn't work right, I'll at least know it's not the ECM!

The guy is a complete idiot. You should NEVER open the ECU or even touch the pins without taking precautions against damage to the components inside. At the very least you should be earthed. The board contains many low voltage, low current devices the human body can carry thousands of volts of static electricity. Even if devices don't fail immediately their life is likely to be severely reduced. I have been involved in electronics design for over 20yrs, where I work if someone handled any equipment incorrectly it would have to be scrapped and they wouldn't be around much longer.
Glad you got a result though.

Well, he just said to open it and look and I'm smart enough not to touch any electrical board without being grounded at the very least, I know that from installing PCI cards and such in my computer...

I'm just glad I took the time to call SIA Electronics before breaking their seals since it was still under warranty! So far, I'm really lucking out with this trucklet... I go shopping for rims as cheap as possible and come home with rims AND tires for $50; I check out the ECM and it's still under warranty; I think this thing wants me to get it running! LOL!

More good news/bad news going on...

I got the news from Bioniconion that the fuel pump I needed to finish this truck apparently got lost in the mail ::) ::) ::) Oh well... I think I might have found another to replace it... we shall see...

I got a call yesterday from the ECM company. They said they got it and tested it and it had gone bad again, so they re-built it again and would be sending it right back to me. Free because it was still under warranty! WooHoo! Once this comes back and I get the fuel tank back together, this thing is running! I can hardly wait!
