Suzuki, Fiat study diesel engine production deal
Reuters / October 20, 2005

TOKYO -- Japanese compact car maker Suzuki Motor Corp. said on Thursday it has agreed with Italy's Fiat S.p.A. to study a licence deal on diesel engine production.

If a deal is struck, Suzuki would produce 100,000 diesel engines a year in Asia using Fiat's technology starting in 2010, a Suzuki spokesman said.

The Japanese company does not currently produce diesel engines.

Suzuki, which is held one-fifth by General Motors, is also exploring the possibility of using Fiat's injection system as part of an effort to strengthen their strategic partnership, the company said in a statement.

Fiat, which makes cars such as the tiny Cinquecento, saw a record loss in 2002 due to slumping sales, triggering a tough restructuring to refocus on its core automotive business.

My GV has a PSA Group engine (Peugeot and Citroën). The new 2006 GV uses a FIAT diesel engine (1.9l 140 hp). And the current Jimny uses a Renault diesel engine (1.5l 65hp). So they change a lot don't they? ;D

How do diesel fuel prices compare to petrol in Europe? Ever since the hurricanes started diesel prices have been consistently higher than gas. As much as $0.75 per gallon higher in some locations.

Diesel costs about 1€/litre. 95 octane fuel costs aroun 1.10-1.15€/litre. 98 octane fuel costs over 1.20€/litre. So it's a lot cheaper than gas.
If I converted correctly, it's around 3.78€/gallon for diesel, which is $4.52/gallon. Expensive, huh? >:(

I've seen deisel prices as high as 3.60/ gal. I filled up yesterday at the most expensive place I found (oops) and it was 2.39. I see mostly 2.29 or so now.
