Title: Sounds like tire noise....
Post by: echojeff on October 20, 2005, 08:36:24 PM
I have been noticing a faint whine, mostly in the front, the last few weeks.  At first I thought it had somthing to do with running the new spare tire,  but thats on the back.  The other tires are down to the wear bars, so I cant imagine them making that noise. It sounds tire whine to me. It has been cooler, so I am not running the AC, and had the windows down also, so maybe I am noticing it more now. I hear it in town at lower speeds with the windows up. Tonight I checked the oil level in the front diff, trany and transfer case.  They are all fine.  I didnt get to the back diff, but I will check it later.  I have just over 100,000 miles on her.  She has auto hubs, could they be talking?  Anything else I should check out?

I bet it's the wheel bearing on one side of another.  I had the same thing a few years back and thought my tires had all of a sudden turned into mud terrains.  They were quiet all terrains.  Took it to a shop and they jacked up the wheels (this is before i knew shit), and did the "wiggle it up and down left to right" and rotate it and that's what it was, the wheel bearing.  I had both sides replaced so they'd be equal.

Check it out.

I changed my wheel berings on my front end for $120.00 Cdn.   Screw that "special" tool you are "need" to have.  I just used a Hammer  ;D

I didn't think of the wheel bearings.  Had to have that done of the rear of the van done this last summer.  It sounded a little diffrent tho. Is it hard to do the the change out your self.  How big a hammer do you need? ;D

I have to work this weekend, so I won't get to check it  for a day or two.  This is my first 4WD, so I was kind of worried about the things I am not use to, like transfer case and hubs.  If its just the bearings, they dont have to be done right away either.  I will have time to get the garage in order first.
Thanks guys
Jeff

Well, I'm 15 years old and it did it.  You just need a 2 or 3 lbs. hammer and a punch

Not to dis your methods there Tyson

But I would recommend taking off the spindles and using a press.

Thanks guys.  I am now getting a picture in my mind what it is.  I thought it being 4wd it would be diffrent than what I've seen before, but I know exactly what and where it is. $43 at Autozone for one.  I dont think you can use an iron to press it out.  (I know bad pun).  I believe it is the left front one.  Do both need to be changed?
