well, I don't know about everyone else driving a sammy, but my rig with all stock parts gets right around 30 mpg.  I did replace the carb a bit back after breaking the fuel solenoid inside the old one during a rebuild.  NEVER DO THAT!  and the new/old carb needs a bit of tweaking.  It doesn't work nearly as well as the broken one did.  I'm right about 27 mpg usually when I'm on the road.  I do want to eventually change out the exhaust manifold to a nice header and get a weber carb.   They work better and improve HP and gas mileage from what I've read.

Don't have a stocker anymore but 28-30 when I did. Weber and header will change mild to wild...Huge difference ! Better cam when you can. Mileage will not suffer but the smog station guy will sing you the blues. No smog in my county after original registration   ;D

Yeah, I found a weber carb and performance header combination for sale on the ebay and they say that it will pass the smog test in all states but california.  I live in washington and our dumb new gov's first act was to sign a law that our smog controls will be just like cali's. I need to find out if that pertains to older vehicles as well as the off the showroom newbies as well before I do my upgrading.  I was also told that changing the exhaust to a high flow catalitic and 2" pipe would do wonders as well.  I guess if I invest the $1000 for all three I should be getting around 100 mpg to compensate for the money I spend up front for the upgrades, huh?  Although I do definitely need the carb, tired of monkeying around with the stock one and some of the problems  that go with it.

I'm just about a mile south of "the Supermall of the Great Northwest"  just about where Interstate 18 and 167 cross over each other.
I do see that you added yourself to the big map,  but when I zoom in I discovered you are either amphibious or you really know how to get the most out of large mud tires since you are in the middle of a good size lake...

My stock '91 with EFI gets 31.xx MPG city combined with a little bit of interstate (65 MPH) driving.  I have 225x75-15 tires (a little taller than stock).
This last weekend I only got 25.xx MPG.  But that was running Interstate at a constant 67-70 MPH for about 4 hours with some fairly big and long hills on about half of it.

i'd be quite suprised if i got 10 mpg to be honest... my carbs broke an leaves the choke on 24/7... im lucky if it ticks over at anything less then 3500rpm..... and between 2000 an 4000rpm it shakes like crazy!!!!

i want to get a webber or nikki carb to replace it... but i cant save any money cos it all goes on petrol!!! vicous circle or what  >:(

just while im on the subject..... with the nikki carb fitted... do you need to adapt the bonnet at all?? ive only seen pictures of it an it looks pretty tall. but i havent seen one next to the standard part.

10 mpg??   I got 32 mpg pulling a 1200 lb. trailer on the way to Idaho on the flat's with my sammie with the 16 valve with 30 inch bfg at's, the rig and the trailer on the scale was about 4300 lbs with all the camping stuff in it, plus me and the wife and the dog!  I would start looking into f.i. it that was my rig.

My stock 96 Carbed Sammy I got 27.78 Mpg when I drove it back home after buying it.

264 miles running no faster than 55Mph 50% trip on flat ground and 50% hilly country.

believe me mrfuelish... i din't choose for it to run like this!!  im lookin at new carbs.... an the island where i live, i would be suprised if the longest straight road is over a mile long.... so its like driving in a hilly urban envioronment that has stupidly high fuel costs.... the sooner i can change it the better.... it used to be just great for fuel!!!!

 ;)

Terry I dont see how  the Weber could pass all states but Calif because the Weber has no where to hook up the stock smog stuff. Dont throw your stock carb away if you will need to resmog at some point in the future. When you remove the stocker color code all the lines and make yourself a diagram for reinstalling the carb if needed. Photos really help also. If your carb is junk you will need it for core charge. Gary Monk at Petroworks is a good sourse for stock carbs and advise on rebuild. Now...make that Sami breath with a Weber and a header and you will be glad you did.

Yeah, I was wondering how it would be able to pass without the proper hookups.  I would still convert it when I get the new stuffs, and I might even take it to the emission testing station and spend my 12 or so bucks just to see what it says, but I would still run it with the better carb and headers.  The header I was looking at has a mounting nut for an O-2 sensor, not that I would have it hooked up with the weber, but it would make it easy if I have to put the old carb back on.  By the way, I have three of the stock carbs, one is missing the fuel solenoid inside it, the others are complete.  When I set them all up in a room next to each other, each of the chokes are sitting at completely different positions.  I hate the stupid chokes on these things...

I get like 26 or so, stock carb old with 150k on it, tired old engine missing some vaccuum hoses. This week I'm getting like 18, but thats because about half of that was in 4wd.

I'm hoping for 30 at least when I drop the tracker 1.6 in +intake + header + 2" exhaust.

Oh and I'm definitly not stock, 31" BFGs, spoa 5.14 tcase gears.

My box-stock carbureted '87 Samurai would get about 25 mpg in everyday suburban type driving (2wd hubs unlocked).  It seemed like a lot less, though.  I had to put gas in it about every other day because the tank was so small...

I get about 23mpg in my stock 92 sammi although it has a performance air filter on. Would this increase fuel consumption?
Thrashing it certainly would which is what i do most of the time to get the full noise from the air filter!   Just cant resist!
