i have a ford explorer now that i want to sell for a samurai, so I can wheel. however, i was told that insurance for a samurai would be double that of the explorer, because they are considered such unsafe vehicles. do any of you samurai owners experience outrageous (or more than normal) insurance rates?

I have liability only on mine and it costs about $30 a month

I pay $106.00 per six months per vehicle for a 91 Acura integra, an '85 Chevy 3/4 ton Pickup and an '88 Samurai for 50/100K BI, 50K PD, 5K Medical per person, 50/100K Uninsured motorist BI and 50K UM PD W/a $250.00 deductible on the UM PD.
Both drivers over 60 W/clean driving records.
In other words, no difference between vehicles.

ipay about $120.00 for 6 months, don't matter if it's been a car,truck,2 or 4 wd.the only time it changes is if i have more than 1 vehicle on the policy, then it drops about 10 to 15 bucks per auto.

I pay 146 every six months w/ P2 & U1 Coverage. I would think that your Explorer might be more expensive than a Sammi.

Holy shit insurance is ultra cheap in the US!!! :o

Not all that great...I pay 650/6 months. 03 4x4 Tacoma, 91 Tracker. Tracker didn't hardly addanything at all, it's almost all the Tacoma. Older vehicles are cheap to drive tho!

Yeah, my Sammi only added about 350-400/year to my Trailblazer policy. And my driving record sux.

That's more like it. :( In British Columbia (mandatory government auto insurance) I pay $950 for my '88 Samurai and $1,500 for my '98 Dodge Ram. That's with the maximum discount. There's no multi-vehicle discount.

I have my samurai insured as a classic car. It costs me 400 bucks per year for full insurance with a listed value of 4500 bucks.
It had to be 10 years old and they needed a picture to make sure it wasnt a wreck to qualify.

It's 25 years here in BC.

I called for a quote and they told me 500 bucks for 6 months :-/

I'm thinking that you need to call around to some other insurance agencies. :o :o
I live down in Oly!

I pay $26 for the 86 sammy and $87 for the 03 Mazda, monthly. ;D

Isurance rates depend a lot on the state you live in. PL and PD (Michigan's basic insurance) cost more on my samurai than on other old 4x4s that I have owned. My personal thoughts are that we have Consumers Reports to thank for that one.
-
Because my samurai isn't my primary vehicle, and rolls less than 1200 miles every 6 months, I pay $300/year.
Also, tell them that Consumer Report's "testing" isn't GOVERNMENT testing... and to go check the GOVERNMENTS safety ratings/rollover statistics.

When talking insurance costs we need to make sure we're comparing apples to apples. One of my relatives was shocked to hear that he was paying a whole lot more for insurance than I was for mine, until I pointed out that I was paying for liability only with no provision to repair my 17 year old vehicle, While he was paying for full coverage on a less than one year old $30,000 plus vehicle. Also,m I imagine that thefact that I live in a small city in New Mexico while he lives in a major city in the midwest makes a diffeerence.

Absolutely right. Larger metropolitian are usually (not always) more expensive than a rural areas.
