Title: How to remove top strut bolt
Post by: BFM on October 24, 2005, 11:29:11 AM
What is the best way to hold the strut from turning while you unbolt the big nut on the top end?  (I do not have an impact gun)

I'm assuming you have it off the truck so you could try wrapping the shaft up in rags or the likes and putting in the vice to hold it, thats what I've done before.

Use a large set of channel locking pliers to hold the hex-keyed washer that's just under the nut while you try to remove the nut with a wrench...

I just use a 1/2" impact gun to take them off and put them on.

I loosened mine while it was still on the Tracker.  I wrapped a rag around a large screwdriver and stuck it between the large hex nut and the strut tower.

First time, I had someone hit it with am impact gun. I would suggest just running to a local shop, and asking if they could hit it for you, then just retighten it with hand tools, and it will come off MUCH easier after that.

Also, as said, channel locks on the hex part of the strut.

I recommend the vise-grips and rag technique; if you're taking them off to toss, you can omit the rag part for the removal...  ;D

Impact Gun and when you do it have someone drive really fast and stop in front of your house (do this on a busy sunday afternoon) then run out in your mechanics suite and a closed faced helmet and quickly hit it with the gun. oh yeah and have a flag person to tell the driver where to stop.......    ;D

Yeah that's the stuff I was looking for.  The large plate at the top was bugging me it really stops the bolt from breaking loose.

I will also try to get some air tools since I have a compressor.  I'll work on the costume later though, maybe just to get chicks to fully dig me and crap!  Cause you know bus drivers pull chicks all the time  ;D and I want to be like that too.
