ok guys, my tracker/vitara with efi 16 valve motor has developed a weird idle pattern
when i'm pulling up to a set of traffic lights and put the put the clutch in, the revs will rise to 1600rpm, then after a second or two, slowly drop back to 800 or 900 rpm. if i blip the throttle while i'm sitting there with the clutch in, the revs will drop to 1600, stay there for a second again, then drop again to 900 or so
this happens whether the motor is warm or cold
any ideas what could be causeing it

dirty Mass Air Flow sensor........could be something else but it worked for me.

thats the one between the airbox and the engine correct?
how do i clean it? just compressed air through it or what?
-
Very carefully cause if you bust it you will be spending $$$. Get some contact cleaner.
-
Antt, I got contact cleaner from Dick Smiths but all you need is Isopropyl Alchohol and a cotton bud but as I said be VERY CAREFUL with those wires as they are very fragile and if a wire breaks it will mean a new sensor.
-
thanks cj, will get onto it during the week before the comp on the weekend :)
-
ok, so i got some contact cleaner, and went to pull the mass air flow sensor out, but couldn't see these wires your on about. mine was just a plastic ball thingo that springs back and forward when ya press on it. :-/ ......have i got the right sensor or what??? this was the one right next to the airbox...

Antt,
Theres two types, the earlier model is the springy one like yours and obviously CJ has the later model which has the exposed wire that he talks about.
Pics are always good ;)

cheers shane, yep, thats mine on the left.....so wonder if it could still be the cause of all my weird idle speed problems ???
what about the throttle position sensor? counld this be causeing it?
-
Could be a multitude of things Antt,
I love EFI until something goes wrong :(
I normally start with contact cleaner in all the plugs (mine get green crap growing on them with all the
water x'ings it does) and then if that don't fix it my normal way of finding problems is to start switching parts over which my neighbors at work (commercial wreckers) normally supply. Failing you being able to do the same I'm not much help !!
-
no worries mate. think i might just have to suck it up and take it to a pro to diagnose
-
Hey Antt,
It's not some thing to do with the high idle for the Air con is it ?? doe's it do it with the air con off ?? Just a thought ;D
-
i dont have aircon, so cant be that
-
I guess thats one less thing to check then ;D
-
check for any vacuum leaks - some vehicles have a valve that slows down snap throttle time - might be stuck
good luck
