Title: Re: My Kick won't start. Turns over great
Post by: wildgoody on March 14, 2005, 04:33:05 PM
The pulse to the injectors is in
milli seconds, you won't see that
on a meter, I would jump the fuel
pump and try to start the truck,
the relay is controled by the ECM,
but the power to the relay is in the
key switch, by jumping the relay
(remove and insert wire) the pump
will run with the key in the on position,
this will let you find out if the ECM is
toast or there is another problem, like
bad relay/fuse or ???

Good luck

I did jump the fuel pump. Just ran a wire from the 12v battery to the pump. I found the information to jump the relay inside the truck.

Also has anybody ever tried this for a test?

The following is a cheap fix to an otherwise expensive (and common) problem: I'd recommend determining that it is indeed the signal to the injector that is not fuctioning rather than the injector itself before applying this fix. If the injector itself is malfunctioning then it needs to be replaced. Locate the engine coil pack, which is mounted on the drivers-side firewall. Splice 14 gauge wire into the BLACK wire coming off the coil pack. Run that wire along the fire wall over to the injector harness and splice into the RED wire on the harness. This will by-pass the fried component in the ECM that controls the injector. Doing this will most likely fix the problem and prevent you from having to buy a new ECM that can cost $400. I had to pay for this information. I thought it should have been free to begin with, so here it is. This fix worked perfect for my 1990 Suzuki Sidkick.

This is a idea just for a simple test. So I don't order any additional parts. The only other problem I found is timing belt or sensors. Doubt it was a sensor since the check engine light was off and everything was running fine.

Thanks,

Josh

That is a rather odd fix, most ECMs work
by grounding the injector, adding an additional
power wire should have no effect, tho the
Suzuki ECM may opperate in a different fashon.

Even if this was a fix, I would think the fuel
economy would be quite poor, many hours
of programming go into the ECM tables to
get good economy as well as good emmisions
from the tailpipe

Yea, I thought it was odd. This is only for a test. I wouldn't run it this way. This is supose to turn the injectors on all the time. But if it fires up. I know it is deffently the ecm. Since all the wiring looks great. Even the stuff next to the block I fixed years ago.

Bioniconion had a similar problem...he sold his truck. ;D

Digger has it now, maybe he knows.

Yeah, I've been fighting with this thing for a few days now. I ended up sending my ECM back to the place that rebuilt it for warranty bench testing and repair, then when it comes back, I'll know the ECM is good.

If you jumped the relay and got the fuel pump running and pumping fuel, but the truck still wouldn't start, I would suspect ECM. I don't know if I would try that test-fix you mention above, but if the ECM is fried already, it wont make things much worse I guess...

How many miles are on your kick and when was the last time the timing belt was replaced? They are supposed to be changed every 60K or so... It's just a rubber belt and if it broke, it would keep your kick from starting...
