Hey guys, my cousin just got through putting a salvage tranfer case in his 87 sami. The guys at the salvage said it worked ok and that it shifted through the gears fine. The problem is, when he drives it, there is a loud whine from 2nd gear up. The fluids are fine, and if you let off the gas, the whine stops. Also, the transfer case doesn't feel like its shifting through the gears. Does it sound like he has just got a bad case or is it not quite that bad???
Thanks,

the whine almost sounds like a bearing to me and the transfer case only has to shift between 2hi, 4hi and 4 low, all the other gears(like 2 on up) are in the transmission, not the transfer case... if the front driveshaft will spin(hubs unlocked) by hand in 2hi and not spin by hand in 4hi or 4lo, then it's at least shifting from 2 to 4 fine. If that checks out, you should be able to tell while driving it if there's a difference between 4hi and 4lo, speed wise. If so, then the transfer case would be working fine... Why did he need the transfer case? what happened to the old one?

I know that the case shifts between 2 and 4. I was just saying that you don't hear the whine until you shift into 2nd gear, don't know if the higher speed matters or not. If the hubs are unlocked, and the case supposidly in 4L, the front driveshaft should still turn right? He drove it with the shifter boot off, and said that the shaft didn't turn until he got down to the bottom of the driveway. He says that the sami doesn't have as much pep, which makes me think its stuck in 4wd, but with the shaft not turning right from the start, i'm not sure. If it turns out to be a bearing, how hard is it to tear into a case?
The case had to be replaced because of a down shifting incident. He also had to replace the trans and the rear 3rd member. He also put on a new clutch while the trans was out.
