My '91 Vitara 1.6 8v, has a problem no one seems to be able to fix!!!
When cold starting the car feels as if it being starved of fuel. It idles ok but when you need to move it seems to 'hold back' unless I put my foot to the floor, then it accelerates fine??!!??
Recently however it has done this when on a run and the engine was at normal running temperature!!!
If it helps, there seems to be a black soot left on the floor beneath the exaust pipe, when the vitara is left to warm up on idle and also the revs pick up to around 1500rpm when either the lights are turned on or the interior fans. Don't know if these are linked or not?
Any advice is really appreciated!!!
Cheers,
Jason.

Start by checking and cleaning all the grounds you can find.

have you checked the O2 sensor

No. Where would I find it and how do I know if it is faulty?

It is located down low on the exhaust manifold and connects to the engine harness. I am not exactly sure how one tests an O2 sensor... but it does affect the fuel mixture through the signal it sends to the ECM.

The engine on this model is a carburetted engine with no catalitic converter. Therefor, has no o2 sensor. Been advised to take it to be tuned as it could be the carb needs adjusting, so watch this space!!!

I'm gonna follow this one, My 96 is doing the same thing. it's only before it warms up, and it's gutless until it does. mine's fine once I get the temp up though. I thought maybe the choke? ???
