Title: catalytic converters
Post by: TonyBalgony on December 04, 2005, 09:36:29 PM
My catalytic converter is rattling pretty bad now :o. Who makes a good replacement for the stock one? I would prefer if it bolts right up to the original stuff but not a must.

Thanks

Oh ya. Its a 92 jlx 4 dr.

is it just the heat sheild rattling?  if so just take it off.. the hetasheild that is ..as for a direct bolt on .. thats a big not gonna happen.. sorry man .. front of the cat is welded on..as for a better freeflowing one.. any performace shop should be able to help you out..

Mine started rattling so I stopped at a local muffler shop and he did a couple of quick tack welds to get the converter back on it's mounts where it belonged and bingo! quiet ever since!

Will a muffler shop run an exhaust with no cat? I'm planning on getting my exhaust done after my engine swap and I don't have enough cash for a cat.

as long as they didn't have to take a cat off, they shouldn't mind working on it

does it effect the engine if you just replace the cat with a pipe?

There are no regulations on emmsionss here, i was just worried about back pressure and stuff?

It depends on the engine management.  If it's OBD-II fuel injected you're playing Russian Roullette by taking the cat off as the rear O2 sensor is after the cat.  OBD-I fuel injected the only sensor is in front of the cat so it won't know if it's there or not.  Mine happens to have been taken off by the prior owner for some reason but if/when I do exhaust work on it I will put a cat back on it.  Modern cats (as opposed to the bricks this thing came with and generally the 70's-early 90's) flow very well and don't hinder performance.  Not to mention here in the USA it's a FEDERAL law to have a cat on.  If your state says you have to or don't have to have it doesn't matter, the US Government says you do.  If a sharp eyed cop every notices it's gone it's your ticket to get.

No idea where you are.. But Canadian Tire sells a 2" in and out for $79.95 and up.  Mine was a high flow for $89.99

the only time a cat will effect anything is if you have a sensor (o2) after the cat if you do not take it off and enjoy mine runs nice but I cannot say anything on the mpg since it got cold here and I have a heavy foot in snow.... sorry,,

Considering my whole exhaust system will run about $200, I don't want to spend almost 50% of the price on something I don't need. Especially since I'm broke.

Yep, it's a FEDERAL law.

That said I know from experience with other vehicles that a cat doesn't care what vehicle it's under and most modern cats flow about the same as high flow cats do.  I know someone who's running cats off a wrecked big block Suburban on their Ranger.  Most junkyards don't care what you take out if you pay for it and most emissions places couldn't tell if the cat on your truck was used or not.
