Here is a vision for us Wheelers, A cross America off road vehicle trail that would basically run from east coast to west coast!
In my dream I see a basic trail that would be accesable by high clearance 4WD SUVS with side spur trails that are rated with higher catagories.
The trail could be a system of interconnected trails from old rail lines, abandoned roads etc.
I could see it starting up in Maine and working south to FLorida then heading west along a southern route west through the southern states to California. Then maybe run north all the way through California up to Washington State, then east through the northern states back to Maine.
Anyone with ideas to expand the dream?

Sounds nice, but the greenies would screw it up
:'(
-
The iron butt for off roaders, I like it.
-
What's cool about this dream is that the right of ways would be all thats needed because it wouldnt need paving. Maybe just some gravel in some spots.
Hey, they're doing rail to trail bicycle trails all over the country and greenways up and down the coasts, why not slip in a little off road trail too?

in utah can go frm arizona to idaho on an atvs. some offroad some on.

This has already been started and should be completed by next summer. I developed the Kentucky section this past summer. It was designed for adventure motorcycles but will also work for small 4x4's like the Samurai. I have had my 87 LWB through the KY section myself. Here is the link: http://www.transamtrail.com/

I can't believe that somebody actually created that! What a great project. Thanks Jeff for the reply.
-
It has taken Sam 15 years to get to where it is now, I vowed to help him finish it by next year. It uses county and forestry roads and is 100% legal. Each day takes you from 200-250 miles and ends at a hotel each day.
On a side note, if anyone is interested in doing a 2 or 3 day loop around KY that is mostly offroad, I would be willing to guide it.

Say some more Jeff, like when and your ideas for itinerary. Start end points.
could be an interesting trip.
-
So, should we get together a bunch of Suzuki enthusiasts and do it?

I really don't have any dates, I just thought I'd throw the idea out there. It can be zook only or we can invite the Jeep guys.

Might be interesting to start in Oregon and work our
way to Nevada and do some of the ghost town circuit
OR cruise all the way to Moab for EJS, make it a 2 week
trip, one to get there and one to wheel Moab, I just
don't know how comfortable you guys would be driving
all the way to Moab in your Zuks.
-
I may just have to that trail sometime, looks like a good way to spend a week on a bike :)
-
It would be nice if they finish the right half of it and to bring it up here to the NE.
-
I'm helping Sam take it to the atlantic this year altho it won't be going to the NE but will be ending in VA.
-
Very nice. I look forward to giving it a go in the future!
-
He does sell each states map so you can just do one state if you want.
-
I'd like to see that cross the boarder in Maine into New Brunswick Canada, then cross canada to the west coast again, it could be a big loop.
-
Here is a link to some pics of the new Kentucky section of the TransAmerica trail that I took a couple of guys on last weekend. Most of this can be done in a Samurai with a good set of tires, I plan on doing the route in my Sammy soon.  http://www.bigdogadventures.com/TAT2006.htm?t=112698

just wondering...what is the widest a vehicle could be and do the trail? a sammy would surely do fine?
-
I'd say a wrangler would be the widest, anything wider may get body damage. This is only in a few spots tho.
-
Man, that looks like a dream come true! I am totally ready to start planning a trip. Glad I left the comfort features in my Tracker! All I need now is a a 5 gal jerry can for spare fuel.
-
You won't need spare fuel, there are plenty of gas stations along the way.
-
Well I've sent 2 emails now to the address on this site about making the KY section part of the adverture series for this year and they have not been answered.

California, Oregon and Washingtion have agreed to construct such a trail, north and south, interconnected, that will traverse all three states. I believe some work has been done in WA and CA, but Oregon has quite a number of trails completed and open and documented that go from CA to WA. 950 miles on one route alone.ÂÂ
I heard that CA trails sections were on the east side (desert side) of the Sierras. That makes sense. I have also heard that it is conceptually completed, but the trails haven't been marked. And that sections that have been marked have been vandalized by so-called 'Greenies'. I don't know that this is true.
I think you have to be a licensed vehicle, but I may not be remembering correctly. Anyway, you can find out for yourself. Google "Oregon Back Country Discovery Route" or use the following links.

Yes, I am planning an Oregon trip. I did the Mojave Trail a few years ago. I took about three days on that. Saw basically nobody. Oh, there was this one University class. Beautiful desert! Loved it. I love to be far away from the city lights, away from car or airplane noise, away from &!#& stereos. I like to hear the birds sing, see the animals. Breathe the air.

So my full size can go... it just won't look the same coming out?
It's been rolled, body damage isn't much of a concern anymore.
-

-

-
