Is it possible to install the old guage cluster with the tach in the post-88.5 sammys?
-
THEY CAME IN THE 87' S SHOULD PLUG RIGHT IN.

I haven't heard of it being done. I believe you will need to get the late model tach cluster, which being fewer go for more $$$. Maybe someone else will post a way around this. Good luck.

I guess i should be more specific, I have a 91 samurai with no tach in the gauge cluster, and im interested in replacing it with a tach equipped cluster from a pre 88.5 samurai.

CHECK WITH RICK AT HAWK. HE COULD SAY IF IT WOULD WORK. I EVEN HAVE TWO SPARE CLUSTERS I DON'T NEED.

I just spotted this on Ebay. They might be common enough in the UK to get a good price on it. I'd check on the shipping. I'd imagine it would run around $25 or so by air to US. Also sounds like the lighting is burnt out...?

thanks for the tips, i've contacted hawks and i will see what they say about it.
I've noticed on my sammy that every option that i didnt have and have added had all the attachment points in place, so im hoping the tach wire is still in the dash somewhere to be hooked too....... ;D

I BELIEVE THE WIRE IS ALLREADY IN THE PLUG THAT IS PLUGGED INTO YOUR OLD CLUSTER.

Ok sadly i have an answer for us all.
RIck at Hawks says that the fuel injected Samurai does not have the speed sensor to fit the old dash gauges and that the gauge cluster from the old dash style will not fit the newer dash style......

I HAD ONE MODIFIED BY TRAIL TOUGH. I JUST PUT IN EFI IN MY 87 SAMI

huh, well iif its more difficult or expensive than plugging in an old gauge cluster then i will just take my chances.
Thanks for all the info
-
Are you going to keep an eye out for the late model tach cluster that WILL plug in?
-
Well...........
Hawks said that the FI samurais lack a speed sensor.....which to my uneducated ear sounds like the thing that tells the gauge how far to spin......
So it doesnt sound like a plug n play , but if it is then im still interested of course!
thanks

I looked in my manual & see that it is only the '88.5 & '89 Samurais that had the carb with the newer cluster. If they quit the tach when the FI started, I guess that's why the late model tach clusters are rarer! I wasn't sure when the FI started. I guess the tach wasn't offered after the vehicle speed sensor was needed. So, I guess the ECM uses the VSS to help manage the TBI. I don't know why they didn't still offer a tach, though. Sorry for the misinformation. I'll attach a link to a thread that might be of interest if you want to try to modify a tach cluster to use. I think I've heard that Trail Tough charges about $50 to do the mod. I've only known it to be done for the 1.6 16v sami swap, but maybe you can find how to modify the late model (or even an early one) tach cluster to your truck. Of course it might be easier to just add an external tach, but it is nice to have it in the dash. I will be doing the 16v swap & plan to do the cluster mod myself, but will be paying for the wiring harness work. That's more than I want to try! It's very late, I'm tired, & the beer has done it's work, so I hope this makes sense & might be of some help! Good luck.
