Title: G13 Cambelt won't run true.
Post by: mudfkr on December 26, 2005, 01:07:03 PM
Merry Xmas all,

I replaced a head gasket on my 89 Sammy now I can't get the damn cambelt to stay on the pulleys, it wants to run 1/4" off them  ???

I've tried reversing the belt, taken the tensioner off and cleaned behind it to make sure that's not throwing it off and mucked around with the tension to see what that done which was nothing at all.

The only thing I can think off is that one of the head locating dowels could have been left out causing the head to be sitting slightly off centre throwing the tracking out which is the next thing I'm going to check.

Any one got any other suggestions before I rip the head back off ??

Hey Mudfkr do you have the crank pully installed? Isay this because it holds the belt on the pulley. I learned this the hard way. I ran the motor just a second to see if the timing was ok without the crank pulley and it spit the belt off. ;D

Did you remove and re-insert the crankshaft bolt?

If so, did you get it tightened down? And, did you put the steel guide behind the crank pulley on so that it's outer edge flares towards the block (assuming that you took it off then put it back on..)

Finally, do the teeth on the belt match the teeth on the pulley? This may sound stupid, but I recall somewhere in a Samurai Galaxy Far Far Away where someone actually found a timing belt with the right length but the wrong teeth! -- Square vs Round or its it the other way... Don't make me take my timing belt off!

Hope this helps!

Kevin,

NO ! I was running it with out the pulley to just check every thing was OK, I'll try it latter Today with the bottom pulley ON  :)

Ack,

We in NZ have three listings for Cambelts for the G13, I know the Swift GTI runs a different profile on the cambelt as well.

Thanks guys for the help, I'll report back latter in the day.
