Title: '89 3rd member into '92?
Post by: LilRed on December 26, 2005, 06:36:08 PM
I found a '89 Sidekick for parts.  Can I swap the entire 3rd members into my '92 Kick?  If so, how do I bypass the RWAL?

Yes the 3rd will fit, I don't remember how to get the
RWAL light off, remove bulb ?  BUT now you have a
10 bolt rear gear, and you must make sure the front
and rear gear ratios are the same before putting it
into 4 wheel drive

Good Luck

I plan to swap both the front and rear 3rds, going from 4.62s to 5.13 gears.  Are both years 10 bolt?

now some of those 1989 rigs that had the 1300 c.c. and a 5 speed had very special gears ::) i beleive they were like 5.83 to 1 . not positive of the exact ratio but i do know that they are worth some money  ;D
just for information

Those were 5.62s and are a great swap for 33" tires

Wouldn't that just be icing on the cake if they were 5.62s but I doubt it.  33" tires huh.  I'm not sure I even want to go to 31"!  Have to see how much help the 5.12 gears are first.  Its pretty pitiful with the stock gears and 235s!  Guess I'll be crawling under the '89 to check if they're both the same # bolts.

He's talking about the bolts that hold the ring gear on in the inside of the housing, does not matter much on the bolts if you have ten or twelve, just the anti lock brake stuff(wire on the top of the chunk) if you want to retain it. when you get  a chunk out count the teeth on the pinion and the ring gear, let us know what ya got.  ;D

Glad you explained the bolts to me!  I got a little worried when I could only find 8 on mine!!!  LOL!!  We're gonna try to pick it up tomorrow and I'm hoping we can tear into it over the weekend!!

WooHoo!!!  We brought home the parts Kick this afternoon and picked up a '91 Hardtop Tracker to boot!  We now own 6 Zuk / Kicks and have run out of room to park them all!!  The Kick definitely has 5.12 gears!!!  It was a piece of cake to pull the front 3rd after we got it home and we'll start the rear tomorrow!!  I'm so excited to have the gears finally, lots of spare parts and just what I need to make some half doors the spring!!  And all for $250!! (not including the '91)  I've got lots to celebrate tonight!!!  Here's a few pics:

Got the rears pulled yesterday, locker installed and everything back in!  Pretty easy to do the entire swap in a weekend, coulda been done in a day.  Ring gear bolts and spline counts the same through 92 evidently!  Took it out wheelin' today and I'm totally thrilled with the lower gears!  ÂÂ
