Thanks, Eric

Hello my name is Matt I live in northern Utah right now, I'm 31, currently looking for work, love to wheel, do repair work on cars trucks and especially Zuks. Here is my 86 Suzuki Samurai I am the second owner of it and I have owned it since May of 2000, it has a stock drive train (for now), 31" Big O XT tires on offset rims, SPOA, 3" taller shackles (I don't like them but I threw away my stock ones long time ago and have no money for new set), drop pitman arm, custom C-Henry diff guards (friend of mine came up with the idea to make them so I named them after him LOL), Thorley Headers, K&N air filter, RRO Driveshaft extensions, Cobra CB, and LED tail lights. I removed the stock front bumper and installed a stock Zuk push bar and added two off road lights to it, cut the door hinges to make them removable, welded a tab to the top of my stock roll bar so when I remove the top I can put the CB antenna up there. When I get a job again future plans are 4.16 T-case & 4.57 R&P gears with air lockers, YJ leafs, electric fan, new polyurethane body mount bushings (mine are shot), possibly power steering and a snorkel, and I'm sure more as time goes on.

I like to help others whenever I can both online and in person, if you have any questions please ask if I do not know the answer I will look for it.

Hey I'm andrew! recently picked up an 88 samurai which i have lovingly deemed "The STV"!! I was looking for a side-by-side to use on my farm but they were all $6000+ which seemed pretty silly to spend that much money on something that can't even go on the road. So i started looking for an alternative and BEHOLD! The STV!!! I had been driving a 98 sidekick for a couple years now and honestly i hated it! Was a lil embarressing to be seen in and the rattle from the loose heat shield on the exhaust made me want to disappear at stop lights!! But then when winter came around and I was breezing by people while their wheels just spun in the snow I became a believer.. The sidekick is dead now.. engine blew when 4 of my friends in I thought we could load it down with camping supplies (lots of beer) and drive 70 down the highway. Oh well, it may not be a daily driver and I wouldn't dream of trying to drive 70 down the highway but now I have a samurai thats already been through some rather extreme conditions and I LOVE IT!

Hello to all, My name is Dan and I live in Thailand.

I love my ZOOK and am always in the mud or the jungles on the weekends here when I am not working.

My ZOOK is a SJ413 and here are some of the mods:

Engine: Nissan Sr20DE
5-spd tranny
roll cage inside and outside
35" Simex Extreme tires
Mitsubishi Axles with manual locking diffs
Double winch, one in front and one in rear, both 9,500 lb. high speed
Stereo, mp3, cd. dvd. Tv, 350 watt amp, bose speakers

Just finished more mods by moving front axle forward and back axle backwards to give her a 108" wheelbase, now in paint shop for new color.

Too many options/mods to remember.

My email is KHUNDAN|removethispart|@gmail.com   KHUN in Thai means Mr. or Mrs. if woman

Cheers

Dan

Post by: tipover on November 12, 2010, 01:22:16 PM
Well I would, but that stuff is very expensive.  It cost me about 500 to make these,  So the profit margin is almost worse than a savings account.

I almost pulled the trigger on a billet front output housing for the t-case with external twin shift, but someone came out with a twin shifter.  What I have found is people in general will try the cheapest option first. and Id have to gamble by producing a large number of units to get the price down.  If I had a retail vendor that would help market and presale, i would consider it.

I've been thought about making a PTO system for the t-case, but don't know what i would use it for.  Since SUZUKI stoped making the input shaft for the PTO, I got the directions from a amphibious car maker how to make them.  I first thought was to put a Electric car motor in the back and put a EFI 3 cyclinder engine in front for a psuedo hybrid.

I always have weird ideas....

It's getting some steel diamond plate rear corners that I will make out of 10 guage steel, gonna fab up some bumpers with aproach guards, eventually full cage and a 4.3 Vortech... I am a Howell Engine Development distributor and Technician, so I will enjoy geeking out on plumming and wiring something for myself for a change! I love doing a super clean install! Maybe a 3 liter Ford though! Beefed up my Z bar that I had to heat and bend more yesterday. Need a hi-steer kit, but it's significantly better than stock! Long tube gussets and quarter inch plate to face it with. Looks pretty good for the little time I spent on it!

Howdy from South Louisiana. I've had this 87 Samurai for a couple years and finally decided to do something with it. Now that it isn't a daily driver, I figure to play with it some. I sold the hard top (no too cold down here) and I have a set of YJ springs from a previous project. My goal is Toyota axles, 31 in tires, regeared T-case, soft top, and swap the tub out with another Zuk I just got.

New member first post.

I just got an 87 JX last week. It has 73k miles. I got it for a beach cruiser and will probably be making a trip to baja.

First thing I'm going to do is power steering mod.

Might get a lift and some tires but for sure it's getting a safari rack.

Can I get a seat in the back? I see everything says that i look at says it won't work on JX.

Looks good!  Yes, you can put a seat in the back.  You just need to find one, all the mount points should be there to bolt it down.  If not you can look underneath, the nuts are there.  You just need to drill them out.

Hi folks, Even though I signed up a while ago (been lurkin' and learnin'), I'm just now finally gettin' around saying hi. Been a fan of the Samurai ever since they started being sold here. In fact, my first "new" car was an beige '87 tin top right off the lot back when they were selling like crazy. Of course, back then I did the Calmini mods. (seems like they had it going on with Zuks before alot of the others) and beat it to death. Eventually I picked up an FJ40 w/a small block and got rid of that little truck but, honestly I think the sami was the better vehicle. (Toyota= too big/heavy/thirsty) The next one was an '87 soft top about 6 yrs. ago, drove the wheels off it and sold it to a guy in Az. where the last time I heard it was a some sort of skeletonized rock crawler. Recently, I found a really nice '86 with a removable 2 piece top that had spent most of it's life behind a retired couples motorhome (peeled no less than 10 plastic reflectors off the back window and bumper!) Now I'm back in Zuki mode and all the other projects around here are just going to have to wait!

Have owned my 87 since about 1997, was a daily driver til 04, sat til last summer and now I'm close to getting it back on the road Had to do some major rust repair on the rocker panel and replace the front clip with one from another donor truck, Used POR 15 on the body and under carriage, had an OME suspension already so I replaced the shocks, diamond plate kit from Low Range and had powder coated, new monsterknob shift knob, new stereo with a unviseral mount which worked great, underseat jeep tuffy box for the back, and M-pac rack from springtail for the rear door,  tuffy center console, ARB bumper and superwinch X6 which i had already, shorxworks side rails, doug thorley header, now just waiting on the exhaust to get here, plus other numerous parts from Low Range and others, thanks for the great service

Most every one I know have been looking for one of these for me for years so when I was told about the add I followed up only to find it was the one I had been trying to buy for years. this little truck is in rough shape allot of rust, motor half missing, but it's a 410k.

hello all,
well, i just joined the forum in the hopes that i can learn and experience a few things.
i have always liked the Suzuki samurai. growing up my best friend's dad had a handfull of sammys and we would always take them out to play. so as it is i pretty much learned how to drive a standard in a Sammy. here i am almost 13 years later and i still love the little 4x4's! i have always wanted my own. and after the last couple of winters we have had here my wife said to me that it would be great to have a 4 wheel drive.  ;) so i told her i know just what to get.... and my mission is about over, here within the next couple of weeks i will be getting my very own samurai! and that is what has brought me here today. to be able to find pros/cons of the little beast and to gain technical information and knowledge of it. I've always been a fan and i am happy to say i am about to be an owner of an 87 samurai. i plan to get pictures taken and posted after i figure out how to navigate the forum a little better.

i look forward to getting to know a few Suzuki junkies here.  :D

That's all for now, as it's currently my 16 year old daughters daily driver.
Next year I'll get it back and start a full off-road build.  8)

P.S. I am looking for a set of 4:1 T/C gears so she can have 5th gear back if anyone has a set lying around.

I see you're from TEXAS !!
A very CLEAN rig from the start !!
We don't see many Sammy's that are not RUSTED up to the door handles up here in Wisconsin.

With the tire size you NOW have, I would recommend a 4.9 transfer case;
You will get 5th gear back, and still have some great low range gears.

Capt., can you enlighten me one the 4.9 T/C gears? Why would that be more preferable than the 4.1?
I'm just curious, shooting blind as I have no experience and 4.1 has been mentioned more than any other.
Don't take that wrong, I sincerely want to know and am here to learn and don't want to do something I'll regret and have to correct later.
Pm or email me if you'd prefer so we don't jack this thread. I'll even pm you my contact number to talk/text if you'd prefer.
Thank you in advance.

now i can be part of both the tracker and sami sections of the forum! just bought this 86ish tintop sami today. my buddy bought it for 600$ for the axles for another project he is doing and i bought the rest for 300$. i think  i will be putting toyota axles under it since sami axles are so hard to come by here. the thing is built like a brick pooper. was built for the trails around here and is solid as a rock. has the 1300 in it and it seems to run really nice. the gas tank is a boat fuel tank in the back.

Love the drab olive color, think I'm goin that route myself.

My 87 hunting rig.  Made a few mods to it for hunting purposes, but will be gettin into more serious mods soon (2" lift, bumpers).

In the woods, ready to hunt (have since replaced the seats)

My stockish Sami.  Only mods are header, 2" exhaust, and Bilstein HD shocks.  About to put a Petroworks 15 gallon tank in and OME medium springs for a better rough road ride.  It is a daily driver and back country explorer.  It is almost perfect for that.

Hey Guys, Some really cool rigs on here!   I'm Chris, I live in San Diego,  I just got into my first Samurai.  It's a 1992 JL

I bought it with the YJ spring conversion on it sitting on 30' radials.

In the last couple weeks I have owned it, I did 2" stainless cat-back exhaust with a magna flow.

Put 2 1/2 " lift springs on, and new 31' BFG's.

New Best Top

Some HID lights on the front... Now I'm addicted, I love this little thing.  It's going to be used for a commuter and weekend wheeler   :)  Here's a few pics:

Did Suzuki ever offer a split rear seat arrangement like this stock?  I have only seen the full width rear seat and not one split like this?  Anyone know if this is a pair of seats out of something else?  If so, what would it be?

Thanks for sharing.  Looks like a nice ride.

Hi guys,

Just picked this up yesterday! A little rough around the edges, 8V lacking power big time, horrible weld job on the cage, tons of play in the steering, and a little rust on the floorboard...but overall... a solid place to start! Lots of good mods on this little truck!

Can't wait to take it out on the trails. I plan to drive it daily around town and drive to the trails as much as possible.

It was May or June of 2011 that I happened upon a questionable deal on an old 1987 Suzuki Samurai that looked like it had been parked in the same spot for years.  The soft top was weathered and full of holes and it was obvious that critters had nested in it for at least one winter.  It wasn't running but I decided to gamble $400 on it, purchased it and towed it home.

A few dollars on a good tune-up, some new jets for the carburetor and a new soft-top for it and the journey began...

The first several weeks after purchasing the Sammi were spent cleaning her up and getting her running right.
The transfer case was stuck in neutral when I picked her up but that was a quick fix. The previous owner had replaced a bushing but failed to put things back together correctly.

I guess the previous owner was also a  stickler for fuel economy. He had jetted down the carburetor to the point where it got no fuel at all. Once I got that right and threw a few tune up parts and filters at it she purred like a kitten.
The oil pan gasket was a bit of a pain  but the struggle was worth it. Prior to changing the gasket it would mark its spot wherever it sat for more than five minutes.

So all and all for less than about $250 she was running good and then another $200 or so for a new soft top and she was ready to go.

Since then my daughter 'borrowed' it from me for a week and between her and her husband and the grandkids they painted it for me as a 2012 father's day present.  I had no idea they were doing that for me.  What a surprise when they brought it back to me.

It has already served me well.  It has taken me some great places already.  She does very well as is but there are places where I wish I had lower gears in the t-case and a little better clearance so gears, raising it and some larger tires might be in her furure.  I just need to acquire the money and the needed knowledge.  I'll save my pennies and I'm hoping to acquire some of the knowledge from you Zukiworlders.

Modifications:  None to speak of unless you want to count the aftermarket Weber carburator

Current problems with her:
One rust hole in the floor on the drivers side that needs to be repaired. (probably because the soft top was in rags while it was stored in the weather before I purchased it)
There's something loose in the cat that rattles like a rock in a tin can.
There steering groans when I turn it.
Minor surface rust in the pan.
Needs a bit of a lower range in the t-case and better ground clearance but these are needed mods more than defects.
Thats about all I can think of.

Hi, My name is Mike. I live in Northern California. I bought my 1988 Samurai JX new for around $6K.  :) It has 148K miles on it now, and has been driven almost daily as my work truck. It has been in the snow, and a few miles in the high desert, and a little off road, nothing serious. It has never been in the mud. I have performed routine maintenance throughout the years, the only major work I have done is new bearings and synchros in the transmission. It is all stock. The seats are showing a little wear, but the top is new and there is no rust anywhere. The clear coat is peeling on the hood, but otherwise it looks OK.
I spent 20 or so years in the military, started out working on M60 tanks, and about 20 years as a ASE cert. heavy duty truck technician.
I still have the first truck I ever owned (1949 GMC 1/2 ton Panel) which I finally finished the body work and paint on. I'll post a pic as soon as I can

Hello,

I recently purchased my first Jimny/Samurai (actually JA11). I will live in Japan for about 1 more year starting in October. I went ahead and ordered a JA11 and had it shipped to a friend's house. I did own a Jeep XJ, but it will not pass the Bi-annual inspection in Japan, so I went with the Jimny.

About my Jimny

- Cappuccino engine swap (not sure about the benefits of this swap)
- Kinda wimpy sport cage
- 6.50-r16 Creep Crawlers
- Small lift 1.5"-2"
- Mild armor

I have a lunchbox locker, adjustable tire deflators, and an MV-50 air compressor in the mail to install when I get back. Maybe some OME springs and shocks from a friend later on.

I'm Jose from So Cal. I have a 86 JX with minor work. SPOA, 4.56s in an open diff to run some 31 Boggers. Been in the offroad scene a while but brand new to Sammys. Anyone have any tips, tricks, or suggestions, please help a fellow wheeler out.

Hi. I'm from Minnesota, but am in Arizona for a few months. I bought my brothers 86 Samurai. It's pretty much stock, sitting in the AZ sun and hasn't been run in 2 yrs. It's a kind of canary yellow. I was told that it was a special order color. The seats are toasted. It just has a top over the cab and a rollbar. Did they all come with rollbars? Anyway, I'm hoping that we get it going. It's still at my brothers place 125 miles from where I am. I plan to rent a truck & trailer to get her home to Minnesota,  where I can spoil her rotten. I have always wanted a Samurai, but could never find a rustfree one. Now, I've finally got one! :-* I'll keep you guys posted on my progress. I'm sure that I'll need some good advice along the way.  :)

Hey, I'm new to offroading, but I came across what is now my new toy for a price that was too good to pass up. Hoping to learn a bit here so I can fix the small problems and then have some fun in the dirt.

Posted a reply but seems to have disappeared?  So here goes, Deb my wife and I collect various motorcycles, and we just bought our first 4 wheeled vintage play thing, a 1987 Suzuki Samurai. I look forward to learning from you all, and thanks for adding me.

Howdy - Bill from Phoenix. Picked up my new '92 Samurai in Edmund, OK on Monday - after a long drive up Sunday, and whipped her back my 9:30a Tuesday! But, used so much gas in the LR, that I could frankly have shipped it for the same price... oh well.
Already in some parts and pieces... pulling off rusted looking parts and cleaning up and repainting - reinstalling - while its so damn hot out. Been fun just tooling down the street for supplies though, so far!
I am forum oriented for all my vehicles, so may be on here a bit... already messed up one post while looking on my phone and not finding what I expected - oops! Sorry!
