Title: Install- Altered Ego 4.5" lift kit
Post by: talonxracer on July 09, 2011, 06:19:37 AM
Well I promised to post up pictures of the 4.5" lift I am installing in my 98' Sidekick.

Here is the front lift components and the diff drop brackets,
 (http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1185.jpg)

Here is the rear lift components,
 (http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1184.jpg)

I have the front suspension just about out, I need to borrow a cutting torch for the A-arm bushing bolts, typical, LOL

This kit kicks the front knuckle/hubs forwards 1.5". During the disassembly I noticed that the stock location has the axles aiming rearwards and this kit will get the axles just about directly in line with the front diff and hubs. The kit includes a solid aluminum spacer that goes in the front struts like this,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1186.jpg)
The Knuckle is placed outside of the strut, a heavy steel bracket goes around this and longer pinch bolts clamp it all together.

Here is a pic comparing the stock front spring to the Altered Ego spring
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1183.jpg)

I got an awesome deal on some ProComp extreme mtr's and steel wheels, 31-10.5-15 (I will post pics when they arrive).

I do plan on a set of twin sticks and a 4.24 crawl gear. Scott from Rock4Xfab sent the sticks out and told me of a interior shifter boot for the twins so I ordered that as well from JB fabricators, it arrived in two days, here are a few pics,,,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1187.jpg)

The kit uses Monroe Sensatrac struts and shocks, saw no sense in paying double the price along with shipping and customs and got those at NAPA(NAPA brand are simply Monroe Sensatracs rebranded).

BTW this is my Sidekick, unmolested by me,,,,,LOL

Well since I didnt order the struts with the kit I had to get my own(NAPA Sensatrac) and modify them, first you have to cut the brakeline retension ears off,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1192.jpg)

then elongate the upper mounting hole on each strut for camber adjustment. I put a piece of 3/8" wooden dowell in the bottom hole and scribed a centerline using a compass, measured 3/16" from the edge of the existing hole and centerpunched, then drilled them out to 3/8". then used a cutoff wheel and a file to fully open up the slots,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1193.jpg)

Here is a strut assembled onto the knuckle as it will be mounted in the kick,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1194.jpg)

Here is a picture of the mayhem so far,,,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1191.jpg)

EVERYTHING will get well slathered with antisieze during assembly!!!!!

I finally got the entire front section of the frame cleaned and 2 coats of chassis-saver silver/aluminum applied, waiting on the Satin Black.

The twin sticks arrived, (http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1204.jpg)

Even though the new top arrived last week I didnt get it on till today, I bought one of the rampage black denim tops, with tinted plastic.

The tires and wheels arrived, ProComp 31x10.5x15 MTR's and their steel type52 wheel, 15x8, 3.75" bs. Here are the tires on the rear (without the rear lift installed), Just to look at them, new shoes!

Man that ride looks soooo clean! And I meant that in the "not beat up, rusted up, boogered up" kind of clean. Nice paint too.

that kit works on sports too??? keep those pics coming! great thread. ;D

or does yours just have the sport type flaring?

I do not know if this lift kit fits a sport or not, the Altered Ego site does not even mention the sport.

This JX Sidekick came from the factory with those flairs/plastic trim.

The UPS guy dropped off the chassis saver and I got the final coat on up front,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1205.jpg)

I had a little silver/aluminum out already so I quickly wiped off the diff(I had already cleaned it) and applied some to it to spiff it up, looks nice,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1208.jpg)

I should have the front end pretty much back together tomorrow.

Now would be a great time to build or purchase a front diff support. It's been pretty well established they work. Your going to all the effort and expense of installing a good lift, it's just a bit of cheap insurance. Unless you've got a steel (HEAVY) housing and third laying around.
Title: Re: Install- Altered Ego 4.5" lift kit
Post by: talonxracer on July 14, 2011, 06:16:28 AM
I do plan on a steel GV diff housing and a steel Vitara third, just not yet. From what I have heard and have been told, there has been zero diff failures with the Altered Ego front diff drop and A-arms. If you look at a stock diff, axle, hub alignment the axles aim backwards approx 10 degrees, this places alot of stress on the diff housing, the altered ego kit places the axles at a direct perpendicular angle.

Great work so far.

As a word of warning I have been running their diff drop brackets for over a year now. Aluminum front end with 31's not locked.  I have not had any trouble with the mounts they are great its the Suzuki casing that is the problem.  First the cross member mount on the diff broke fixed that and put a strap over it, took the opportunity to put some JB weld in the passenger mount hollowed out area and installed some extended brand new bolts.  Kept everything nice and tight, last time I went out wheeling I was hard in reverse the strap at the cross member broke and the passenger mount on the diff sheared off.  Last weekend I gave up, went out and got a steel housing from a Vitara.  Hopefully this will give me some peace of mind.

That being said I do not have the system that locates the wheels 1.5" forward.

thnx for the compliments,,,,And the stell diff housing and third will go in when the locker goes in.

Here is the front diff/third before and after cleaning, trimming the rib, painting and install,

Drivers side drop bracket, the bottom outboard bolt hole is not drilled or tapped on my Diff housing, just a pilot hole drilled, maybe I will drill and tap it.

Pass side drop bracket and the A-arm slid into place
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1212.jpg)

With the spring installed, driveshaft in, waiting on the knuckle/hub,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1213.jpg)

The seal on the inboard side of the knuckle/hub is AFU, I called NAPA and they had one in stock, but it doesnt look the same at all!
Title: Re: Install- Altered Ego 4.5" lift kit
Post by: talonxracer on July 15, 2011, 08:37:01 AM
I spent about an hour and a half searching thru NAPA's catalogs(my cousin owns a NAPA) and found the seal, it is NOT called a knuckle inner oil seal(suzuki's name), but outer axle seal, the inner axle seal refers to the seal on the diff. My cousin stated those seals are in stock in alot of places, but the sales are very low, I told him "no shyt", it is labled something entirely different! LOL

A discovery today,

While I was laying under the vehicle wiping some of the excess antisieze off, making youthfull engine noises and climbing imaginary mtns I pulled on the A-arm and it moved almost a quarter of an inch and thunked!

I knew immediatly what was happening, the a-arm's bushing were too short and the crush sleeve/center bushing was the correct length, thusly when the bushings were all greased up the A-arm could slide back and forth on the center bushing. I made a quick trip to the parts bin and found 8 large washers with a center hole of 3/4", they fit perfectly and the A-arm has no movement back and forth, but doesnt impact the up and down movement, the washers will also help keep debris and stuff out of the bushings and they should last far longer. (crappy pic, macro feature screwed up on the camera, but ya get the idea) This is done to both the front and rear bushings on the a-arm. I can not see how having almost a 1/4" of A-arm movement would be of any help............

I went by NAPA this morning and picked up the seals. It took a whole 5 seconds to install, LOL

I put the spring in and jacked up the pass side, slid the axle in, then installed the knuckle and put the ball joint nut on. The directions from Altered Motorsports states installing the spacer, bracket and bolts to connect up the knuckle and strut is the hardest part, it was by far the easiest part of this install so far! The front brake line is far too short to fit into the bracket, I have a spare set of stainless steel braided RSX typeS brake lines and the front brake line seeems to be the correct length, I will be giving it a try.

Remember to at least put the upper caliper bracket bolt into the knuckle or you will be taking it all apart again....you can not with the knuckle all bolted up to the strut in it's offset position,

Well I had to go out and get that caliper bracket bolt installed, not too bad at all. So I decided to finish up that side. That purty front bumper will have to go, I see NO WAY around it!

She has a nice stance!

Here you can see the difference, the rear does not have the lift installed.

I like the looks of the extended wheelbase as well, plenty of room between the 31's and the rear of the front fender well.

I finished up the front except for the new Warn hubs and drivers side axle, I decided to back it out and back it in to work on the rear. As soon as I tried to turn the steering wheel just a little I heard a loud rubbing from the front, forgot the bumper needed to be trimmed, I took care of that with the sawzall...I will clean it up with a rotozip tool, just needed to move the beastie.

she has a nice stance up front! The pass side bumper is trimmed close to where it will be finished at, the drivers side will be trimmed to match.

I did get a small start on the rear suspension and decided it was getting too darn hot out! Here is a pic showing the old rear spring and the new lift spring, a world of difference, thicker, taller, closer coils

There are no steering modifications required, just adjusting the steering stops. Of course if you go with larger tires that spindly idler arm will need to be addressed.

Not too bad looking from the outside

Here is the forwards fuel tank mounting bar, The rest of the frame and chassis is not that bad,
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/talonxracer/IMG_1232.jpg)

The third link has to be torched out, as soon as I get it out I will be cleaning up the rust a bit and applying Chassis saver, I caught this in time I think. The only real damage is that frame tube/fuel tank mount support that corroded apart. I gotta think upon this for a few days.

I was allowed another corner of the garage for a few days,,,LOL

This is gonna be a bitch, they are rusted very tightly, I may end up having to drill the bolt out and retap it.

Post by: talonxracer on July 19, 2011, 06:03:17 AM
Altered Motorsports does make a heavy duty replacement.

I think what I will do is cut out the really bad sections of that tube and cut a piece of cheap steel pipe, cut to length(entire length of the frame tube(luckily it is a straight tube)), saturate the inside of the remaining tube with chassis saver and use a urethane adhesive to "glue" in the new pipe, then wrap the outside of that with a fiberglas tape saturated in chassis saver, the fiberglas is not for strength, just a matrix to seal the rust from air.
Title: Re: Install- Altered Ego 4.5" lift kit
Post by: talonxracer on July 19, 2011, 10:57:13 AM
Got started on the front fuel tank support, I measured the id of the tube and it was 1.340" i had a piece of 1" id galvanized pipe, it had a OD of 1.310, That gave me approx .030" for chassis saver I cut the really bad section of old tube out and used a bottle brush to apply chassis saver into the original tube.

The galvanized pipe is 42.5", i couldnt drive it all home, but it is just past the outside of opposite side frame rail, so I figured that was enough. I just wanted the existing mounts to support the fuel tank, a quick and fairly easy fix!

Here is the pipe from the underside,

You got plenty of bolt sticking out there.  So just get a torch and heat the third where the bolt goes into it, then take some vice grips and turn the broken off bolts out.  If that doesn't work, get a big nut that will fit over the bolt, weld the nut onto the bolt and the heat will help loosen the bolt and you can use the nut to turn it out.  I had to use the weld method, when the bolts twisted off almost flush with the third.  Oh, and be sure to clean all the oil off the bolts, before you weld the nut on (use brake cleaner to clean the oil off).

OK, it is about 100 outside and at least 120 in the garage, not doing anything but early in the AM, LOL

BUT, I did get some stuff done, I have had BAD luck and experiences with leaving black oxide coated parts exposed to the weather, black oxide is very porous and will absorb water as readily as oil, so a quick wipe with S8 reducer and a coat of satin black chassis saver was applied.

I should have it all buttoned up under the vehicle by noon tomorrow as long as I figure out the length I need to set the rear links at, I had to cut the stock links out and need the length of a stockie first. Anyone have a stock link available to measure?

I got the rear end mounted up to the links, I still need to bleed the brakes and install the driveshaft spacer and reconnect the Ebrake cables at the brake handle. the rain was starting to fall and it was absolutely miserable outside, (75 degrees and 90% humidity at 7am) so it is break time, mounted the tires on the rear axle and snapped a few pics.

Is that a stop nut, or just part of the bung, on your upper rear difflink?  If it is a nut, why would you want to stop it from turning slightly when the rear is flexing one side or the other?  I made a similar set up on my Tracker before 4 linking it, and did not use a stop to allow twisting.

I really like the details of your build.  It is a really clean car, and your work is the same.  I am enjoying this, thanks.

with no jamb nut the threads wear out quickly and the joint will pull out.
Title: Re: Install- Altered Ego 4.5" lift kit
Post by: talonxracer on July 24, 2011, 07:12:02 PM
Yes that is a jamb nut. Those Creeper links have enough movement to not be an issue from what I have seen, more than enough flex.

I will get some trail pics as soon as the new shifter comes in(current shifter has no sealing rubber boot to seal the trans). I took a short drive around the "yard" and down the paved road a bit. The suspension is silky smooth though a bit stiffly sprung at first, altered says the springs will break in and will have a fantastic ride. No suspension noises at all. I currently did not reinstall the front sway(mine is too corroded), but I will wait and see how it rides first.

Thanks for this thread, I've been considering the bolt on 'kick options for my new black 93 2dr tintop dd for three months now. The AE parts are great but I won't be going with the full kit for reasons yourself, others and myself have concerns about.

All the rear parts are totally bang-on though but I don't want the front arms and will unfortunately have to buy the basic 2" CM kit just for the arms with all the bogus parts inc. to make my own version of a 3" ifs lift. I'm seriously considering sending them back at my cost to send a message to CM! Basically I'll be much happier and it'll still cost me less. A 2" bl, minor trims and a tank lift will be done as well, 31x9.5-15 TSL radials on stock rims w 1 inch spacer are my tires of choice. (BC, Can.)

Some history: my now (bought new) almost 20yo '92 retired dd Sami has a very tweaked 6" spoa and has tons of rocker and frame clearance with 32s and is still all ZUK including our supposedly crappy welded Jap. tcase gears: 200+k km later, too funny...(real machinists, welder, 110k rod, slow vermiculite cooling on naval bronze core, blah, blah) everyone knows aftermarket gears are far better than oem Japanese... :P

Sorry about the minor rant, your ride looks great and I look forward to some trail images.

I have no concerns over the full kit whatsoever, sure a few small items need to be scrounged up like washers etc, but then again I had to replace every nut and bolt already. Sure it is a tad pricey, but not that bad.

I had to rebleed the brakes and adjust the pinion angle, got the pinion done and started to do the brakes and it started to rain(very heavy downpour).

How much of that Chassis Saver did you end up using and what did you end up covering with it ?  The whole Frame ?

There is no problem with power at all, she will easily walk over that chunk of wood! LOL dont worry bout that, I have found a set of 5.38's to install later on as well if I find the kick needs it.

I coated the entire front of the frame from the firewall forwards and under the rear end, coated the front and rear diff/axle housing. I will do the rest of the frame when I pull the trans and transfer case to install the 4.24 w/twinsticks. I also used the aluminum/silver on areas of rust under the hood and will start doing the inside of the cab next week.

When the new tires and wheels arrived the wheel weights had all fallen off, I contacted the seller and they covered the costs of rebalancing. I just got them balanced today and took a short ride and she rides nice and smoothly. The trans shifter boot is on it's way and is all I am really waiting on to go wheeling.

I had removed all of the rear brakelines so I just planned on changing the fluid out, the old brake fluid was a nasty brown color, she has all new fluids and likes the extra attention she has recieved.

I had to trim the rear bumper cover as well,

I have spent a few hours driving some logging and fireroads, as well as a few railroad tracks and plain dirt/shale roads and the springs have started to settle down and smooth out. I need to have a alignment done now!

Yes get an alignment.  I ate up my front tires in little over a month after my last modifications.  Now I am waiting until the next modification so I can put on bigger tires.

You have a good looking ride.  It looks capable, but sooo clean.

Thnx!

Well the alternator took a crap, it is only a dinky 44amp! A remand costs 275$, no way, I will take the alternator mounting plate and cut and reweld the tabs so I can install a Delco-Remey 12si alternator, probably a 78amp flavor.

Well she needs a bit more umph due to the larger/heavier tires, the required 5.62 or 5.83 ring and pinions are hard to find and cost more than I can afford! There is a rather low cost option that actually is a plus, the 3spd auto trans equipped Sidekicks came with 4.3 R&P's, so with my 5.12's the 3spd auto should be perfect. And it is more relaxing to trail ride and rock climb with an auto trans. I already found a 95' 3spd w flexplate and torque convertor as well as the transfer case for 300$

While I have the transfercase out I will break it open and install the twin sticks, I would like a 4.2 crawl gear, but the budget, the budget....

The interior is compltely cleaned, patched, ChassisSaverd and prepped for the Monstaliner. I am not putting any carpet back in, again the cause for corrosion! The Monstaliner is now available in tintable colors, and a shit load too! http://monstaliner.com/forms/monstaliner_colors.htm (http://monstaliner.com/forms/monstaliner_colors.htm)  I ordered the medium Quartz gray color, it almost matchs the original carpet color!

just stating the obvious:

Like all, Suzuki oem exhausts (mufflers/tail pipes) are very restrictive, you can still have quiet as well as significant power/econ gains with just a cat-back set-up. A good cam really helps mid range power as well as potentially helping mpg too depending on driving style.

Totally stay away from the early 3spd auto, it's a POS, if you want an auto go with the OD 4spd. You may need a new ecm etc though for either if you're so inclined. Lower geared R&P changes beyond your factory 5.13s are costly, weaker and likely become a longevity issue as well if you do distance/highway drives. Mechanically I think your rig is great the way it is for now, even without the preferred/required t-case gears, exhaust&cam upgrades and rear locker. Granted your road gears aren't ideal and a little long, top gear rpm is good though, right?

[first Zuk: new 84 SJ410 lwb, w. 48hp 1.0l motor. I-5 and Pismo dunes not an issue. Zuks are now the 'in crowd' in BC, Can. (too funny) 25+ years later, so many stories...]

The TH180 is a fantastic little transmission and would solve the gearing issue easily as it is a factory setup. The 4spd autos do not have the same gearing and would be no different than what the 5spd manual provides, so that is the reason the 3spd is desired. I also have broken several clutch pedal shafts(welds break, factory welds) and do not want those hassles, nor the hassles of the harness/ecu swap, and finally having to still buy R&P's......

I do plan on a Thorley header and a 2" mandrel bent exhaust and the intake needs to be addressed.

That camber is exactly what it is supposed to be, the front end was lifted off the ground, and when the sidekick was set back down the tires prevent the suspension from setting back at normal so they have that spalyed look. When driven the camber is exactly at +0 degrees 30 minutes at level rest.

I have run two full fuel tanks thru her since completing this lift. The ride is alot better than stock, especially when bombing the back dirt/fire roads at speed. I calculated the fuel mileage taking into account the larger tires and I have been getting 30.1mpg, that is a combo of city/trail riding(no low range trails) and paved/dirt roads(and not hammering it). That is most certainly far better than what my Silverado gets, LOL ! ! !

The gearing is not correct, a tad too high, so I will do the 3spd Auto. Also the existing stock drivers seat is shot and needs to be replaced/rebuilt, any thoughts, ideas or links to seat recover/rebuild kits????

I just finished up bleeding the new 4dr brakes. They clear the coil spring FAR better than the stock 2dr caliper!!! And they provide signifcantly better braking!!!!!!!!!

BRD HNTR had an issue with the springs hitting the calipers, the fix was to change the angle on the spring pad so it was flat again after the lift.

Do you notice better braking?

No issues whatsoever with clearance with the spring and the 4dr caliper, you do need a low profile bleeder screw(read messy bleeding!)

The braking is immensely stronger and lasts far longer before brake fade starts impacting braking.

Hi

Really nice ride you have there. The Altered Ego parts are nice and seem to really work well plus they have great service. I have the rear Super Flex setup on my 5 door Sidekick Sport and sort of wish the 4.5" kit would have fit the Sport. The effort and time you put into your vehicle really shows and I am sure you must thoroughly enjoy your ride a hole lot more now. I gotta get some of that stuff you use on your frame to clean it up and protect from rust.

I run 33" on my Sidekick Sport with the stock 5.12 R&P with the 4spd Auto (1.8L engine) and it is doing fine aside from highway passing with a headwind :P. It has a total lift of 5.5" (3.5" suspension + 2" Body) Old Man Emu, Rocky Road and Altered Ego parts. Off Road I do use Lo-Range allot but can cruise up to almost 35 MPH in Lo witch works fine for me at least, meaning less shifting from Lo to Hi. I do have front and rear 5.83's with lockers installed in 3rd members waiting to go in. I am searching for a reasonable priced Grand Vitara XL7 steel front first to install the frond R&P in.

But might I point out a place you can purchase 5.72 R&P at:

http://tr.4xfourart.com/4xfourarten/urunic.php?id=3 (http://tr.4xfourart.com/4xfourarten/urunic.php?id=3)

I must admit I have no information other than that I found this link through the local Suzuki club website here in Iceland (my home country). But this seems to be the only place that has R&P for sale that are new. Trust me, I looked around for over a year for the 5.83's I have, got them used. Just my opinion but R&P swap was the best option for getting power back with larger tires.

It would be cool to see some pictures of your ride in action on the trail somewhere that you do Off-Roading.

Best regards,
Tryggvi

I have about 800 miles on the lift kit and vehicle rebuild. The suspension is working flawlessly, I did just notice the rear drivers side shock has started to leak in the past few days, not too good(though they are just monroe sensatracs). The 4dr brakes are awesome and the Monstaliner bedliner is easy to clean and tough as nails!

There is 16+ inches between the frame and the ground running the ProComp 31" MTR's. I didnt install the sway bar and the handling is fine without it, the trail manners are very nice and washouts and gullies are easily navigated with the amount of rear flex and front drop. Paved roads are no problem at all, smooth driving and handles as good without the sway than the stockie with the sway.

I plan on doing a timing belt/tensioner/waterpump/cover this weekend, there is 110K miles on the ticker and I am only assuming the belt had been done when due as there is 2 missing cover screws . While I have the VC off I will also check the valve lash etc and replace the leaky VC gaskets.

I finally found the measurements that I took of the Sidekick before the lift, she was sitting at approx 27" to the lip of the front wheel well arch on the stock limp spagetti coils, she is sitting at 36" right now. That is a 9" lift out of the altered Ego lift kit and the 31x10.5x15's.

I was running their diff drop brackets and the aluminum third only lasted one trip, it met a rock and shaved off the bottom of the differential. I am pretty sure it was worse than it would have been, as it was sticking down that much further.

I picked up a front OEM skid plate and paired it with the alteredego transfer skid & transmission skid. I'm happy so far.

I've been running an ARB in the stock front diff aluminum housing with my own diff strapping system and Calmini skid plates with no damage whatsoever in 50K miles and some pretty seriously wheeling. The aluminum one will hold up fine if braced from twisting and is a bunch lighter than the steel counterparts.

Ouch! Been there before. The tip just popped right off and sprayed a few inches away. Can't even tell now though. Been about a decade and I don't even remember which finger it was. I used a bandaid to hold the tip on until it stuck back to the finger. Was just skin though.

This is what I made for front Skid Plate.  A fab shop would bend it up pretty quickly.  I made a cardboard MOC of how I wanted it bent, and use an angle finder to get it close.  My dish on the bottom (used propane cylinder) is not heavy enough.  Mine is 3/16" and can be bent (but not by much).  I welded stiffeners on the sides to keep it from bending.

Get a piece of cardboard and see what you come up with.  (If you want my angles and dimensions I can get them next trip under it.)
