Title: 4WD stick won't stick
Post by: caranpaima on February 21, 2018, 06:51:52 AM
Hello everyone

Ever since I changed the transfer case I have been having issues with 4WD. The car works fine in 2WD but when I go into low range, the 4wd gearstick will suddenly jump to neutral and many a time when I try to engage it, it will not hold its place, ugly noises (as if it is only partially engaged) come from the gearbox and then the stick jumps back to neutral. This is also true of 4H. What would be the problem?

Whatever it is, it's most likely internal to the transfer case, which makes me think the replacement you put in is defective.  Why did you change it in the first place?

Assuming that we're discussing a second gen vehicle (that's the forum section you posted in), the early transfer cases had a problem jumping from 4L to N and two of the internal parts were redesigned, I believe a gear and possibly the selector hub, this might be related to the problem you're having, if the replacement case cam from an early vehicle, or it could just be worn parts.
