Operation "Death Star"
« on: December 31, 2005, 12:40:25 PM »
Hands up all that agree with the name of this new star ???

Build site - Christchurch, New Zealand

Build time - For freak'n ever

Build spec - All the good stuff that makes an off roader go forward ;).

37 inch Wranglers ( maybe Calmini 4140 axles at a latter date for strength )
Rancho 9000 shocks so I can fine tune the damping
Long arm rear end for lots of travel ( ZeusZuki has 700mm / 27.5 inches of travel just in one rear corner alone with straps - real handy in the rough stuff ).
Stock front end with softer springs ( to help it work better with the lighter rig ) Sammy stub axle upgrade as well latter on to help with bearing loading
Steel front end with universal joints and slip yoke drive shafts for strength
1600 16V donk ( learned from experience that if you flip your rig over these motors are easy to get the oil out of so you can keep going )
Stock kick T-case with 4.24's and Sammy doubler
Weld the rear ( thank you Mike for the feedback )
Locker in the front ( so I can steer the damn thing )
Power steering
Oh yeah and the front cut and tuck.

Chop Chop Chop  to slim the old b-atch   down

Have I missed anything ???

What do you mean by this? Is it normally not a good idea?

It is always surrounded by debate - to weld or not to weld ???.

Off road positive traction is just that but because the axles are permanently locked and there is no way to disengage them it can cause problems ::) - vehicles tend to "sledge" when you are trying to take tight turns :P, on slippery side angles the rear can slip round and send the back end down the hill ( just when you do not want it to ) :-X, the transmission can get pretty badly wound up  :-\ etc etc.

But it is a cheap and generally effective option ;D

Not a modification for your road vehicle that is for sure :o

I know people who've done spools and welded rears with little trouble on regularily driven street vehicles...but they were all a hell of a lot longer than a 2 door Kick/Track/Escudo. :P  It can be done but with our short wheelbase it'd be hard to justify on one of these if it will see regular street time.
