Part #'s
« on: January 06, 2006, 04:31:25 AM »
I would like to do the steel front diff swap in my 95 tracker, but have had absolutly no luck finding salvage parts. I've been to or contacted every yard in the metro Phila/ So. Jersey area. But there is good news! No, not car insurance, I can order the parts new thru my buddies auto body shop with a substantial (30%+) discount. Problem is we need actual part #'s for the steel diff carrier , axle housing, seals and crush washer, etc. After a lot of archive searching It looks like I can use a 99 Grand Vit assembly complete. (I am going to swap my gears, ARB and axles into it.)  If this is true, it would make things a bunch easier. If not, could anyone who has done this steer me in the right direction with the PN's.?

Forgot to mention the reason I need PN's:without a VIN, they (parts people) can't / won't be able to look it up. Or so they say. Thanks

I think the dealer quoted me a price of around $300 for the housing and $250 for the diff carrier/ brg caps and bolts. But that was for a 2003 model. I'm assuming it's a '99 I need because that's what "HotRod" used in his 95 Tracker. I'd like to get both together. Thanks for any input on this!

Yeah, I used a 99 carrier in my 95 Sidekick (with my Anvil).  Too bad I couldn't just steal it off my wife's 99 GV!

Howdie ;D
back when I did the swap. i was told the steel dif was in the 99-01 5spd Gv's.
i guess now, The steel difs are in the 02 and up autos too?
I'm looking to get another one for the 4dr ;D
I got lucky,   Right b-4 mine broke a friend was telling me all about the steel swap.
I later (hat day, broke mine)went to a local yard and found the whole steel 3rd and housing for 500 bucks out of a 99 GV.
Just need to get either a front locker(ARB) or a Sammie rear center section (4-pin spider gears) machined out to fit the 26 splined ( I forget, it's been so long) axles out of a 96-98 Kick and swap in your gears.

;) Thanks Hagen, I'll keep looking for salvage parts, but I think I may be able to get off cheaper with discounted new since I don't need the internals, just the housings. In the mean time I've fabbed a support bracket/strap for the front of the carrier that wraps around the snout, clamps shut, and bolts to the cross member on both ends. This should prevent any twisting movement, which I believe is what causes the breakage, especially at the front mount area. We'll see if it works, I'll post photos after I get it mounted.
