Tracker won't start when warm. Please help.
« on: February 04, 2006, 09:21:02 AM »
Well this is my first post on this forum as I have been reading pages and pages of great info and I havent found someone with a problem like mine. So I have a 1991 Geo tracker that will not start unless the engine is cold. If I drive it long enough to get they Tracker to operating temp then shut it off it won't start up without alittle help of starting fluid.I took the air intake off while my wife was cranking it and found that when it is warm it is not sparaying any fuel out of the injector. When the egine is cold it will start right up without hesitation and purr like a kitten. My guess is that there is a switch that is bad but I really need some help as to locate which way to look. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There aren't any switches, I would check the
Intake Air Temp and the Coolant Temp sensors.

Also, when you are starting hot, do you try to
give it gas by pushing the throttle ? if so, don't
put your foot all the way down, this is a flood
clear mode on some EFI cars, tho I'm not sure
if the SideKicks were equipped with this

You could also look at the Throttle Position Sensor.
Get a cheep book like Haynes or Chiltons for testing
info on the TPS.

What  you have is a lean hot start condition, I'm
not sure what else could be causing this

I have replaced the TPS and I have a Haynes manual. As for the starting method. It doesnt seem to matter if I start it with no throttle or hold the peddle to the floor , the injector just doesnt spray any fuel at all when it's hot. Thanks for the input. I will look into replacing the sensors that you mentioned.
