gearing and gas mileage
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:56:56 PM »
I bought my Samurai with 30" tires and tracker 5.12 diffs front and rear.....

I know the speedometer  doesnt measure right, seems to read about 35 when im going about 25.

Im getting about 22 mpg right now and i dont really need the low end power boost of the lower gearing.

I have looked at the gearing calculators but the only ratio i know is the 5.12......as far as i know everything else is standard.

If i change the diffs back to samurai orginals will that correct the spedometer?

Thanks for reading.

I'm running 4.62's from an automatic trackick with 31's the speedo is still out like yours, I'm guessing you don't pass to many people on the hi way ;)

My speedo is out but I still keep up with traffic (even pass from time to time ;D)

1st and 2nd gear must go by pretty quick in your rig, the last time I calculated the gears with 31's the gear closest to back to stock was 4.30 + or - ,these gears exist but I don't know what model or year

Don't think that helped (maybe just gave you a new headache ;D

 Steve :)
When this thing hits 88 MPH your gonna see some serious sh!t (hahaha)

If you have a stock transfer case you need the gearing for off road, plus the gears you have make it easyer on the parts up stream over transfer case gears, with stock gears and those tires I think you would hate it.

Don't swap!! If anything, get some 32's. I have the same set up in my kick (I installed a sammi case in mine), with 5.12's. Not the best for hwy driving, but it's not my DD. If I remember correctly, when the speedo was reading like 65, I was doing like 52 or so. Off by a bit!  :o Verified w/ a GPS. I need to get it on the hwy and run it out, see what I can get.
