speedometer alteranative ????????
« on: February 05, 2006, 11:21:46 AM »
Ok  i have done some reading and found that i dont have the speedomerer hookup in the trans but only if i use the transfer case.
well here is my problem.  im using the 88 samarui 5 speed in conjunction with a suzuki dohc motor in a geo metro convertable to make it rear wheel drive.   My question is  How do i configure or make a speedometer hookup so i can see how fast im going.  are there any aftermarket alternatives.  I dont know like a magnetic hook up or some other type of sensor that i can put on the driveshaft.    Or should i just get a 2wd tracker transmission.  i have been told that  tranny does have a speedometer hookup.
can any verify this or show me pictures of this 2wd transmission for a tracker or sidekick

thanks  bill

Bill,

That sound's like a lot of work!!!You could put it on a 4x4 frame and have the first Metro rock crawler...That sounds cool...You could use GPS to get speed??I used that in my Dirt track car.Worked very well,we use them on ATV's all the time...In WV we can run on blacktop for ten miles to get to trail etc.

Some people use the tachometer to monitor the speed.  They clock the vehicle through a known distance at an indicated RPM, calculate the speed, and post a cheat sheet on the dash.

yea i can do the tach thing but i may not be the one driving the car so i was trying to make it work some how.   i hope that someone has already had this problem and had some way of getting around this.  does anyone know of an electronic setup that might work...

You might be able to adapt an aftermarket system like a TrailTech computer if you can mount the sensor on a rotating part. Do you need the speedo to make it road legal and if so do you need a mileometer too? Is this an injected car because they have a sensor in the speedo head that you might be able to utilise

Hand held GPS mounted in the front window. Speed, direction, all kinds of cool info (and not to expensive)
