Hi to all,glad I finally found a board where things get answered without ridicule!

I have been very lucky to be given(oh yes,a freebie!)a rather tidy-ish SJ410,after my beloved Fiat Panda 4x4 was savaged by a disgusting smoky old Bimmer with a blind idiot at the helm!I am now giving the Zuki a makeover,and tweaking all the tweakable bits,but I'm struggling a little with the carb.It appears to be the stock item,with 'Aisin' stamped on the side.My MOT tester said the motor was runing rich,and having twiddled with cars plenty of times in the past,I told him I'd sort it myself.However,I'm now at a loss as to what to adjust,the carb isn't like the weber or holley units I've played with before!What direction do I turn the mixture screw to weaken the mix?Any adjustment I make at the moment doesn't seem to make any difference,the lump still chokes up after a few minutes at idle.Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Is there any way you could snap a picture of the engine bay with paticular focus on the carb? That would help in diagnosis, for me anyways...

Sorry Eric,I don't have a digi camera as yet to provide a picture.I do know,however,that the engine is not original to the car.The chap who gave it to me replaced the original lump with one from a Bedford Rascal(Suzuki SuperCarry)van,I will find out if he swapped the carb or kept the original Suzuki one,maybe that will help identify it?

Check the rear of the engine housing on the driver's side (OOPS! I mean the left side facing forward) right at the bell housing.  If the engine is Suzuki, there should be a displacement value and engine type cast into the block.  This information might lead us to the engine type and possibly carburetor identification.

There are quite a few members here from the Pacific Rim who are familiar with the SuperCarry (something that never made it to the USA) who might be able to further ID this carb.

Look here for some info on Aisan carbs. It's about Canadian Samurais but I'm guessing it's a very similar carb. There's a metal tab on one of the bolts on top that's the model number of the carb. You can order rebuild kits from Australia.

The reason I ask is your inference to it being 'like a weber/holley'. If it's still the stock 1.0 liter engine with stock carburation it would be a single barrel sidedraft carb more like a motorcycle vs. automobile.

Is it a sidedraft?

Of course you did say 86 there maybe changes from 85 (what I'm familiar with) to 86. We definitely need some Canadian brain muscle on this. Anyone?

There are differences between the Rascal engine and the 410 engine but I'm not familiar with them. That swap has been done a few times and there is a guy on Difflock.com who knows all about it.  AFAIK thre are no significant differences between the earlier and later 410s. I ditched mine for an SU so I've never had to adjust the stock carb. Looking at the FSM the idle speed adjuster is on the top of the carb, the manual shows a special tool supposedly required. I've been away for a while, if you are still struggling PM me and I will have a look at the stock carb.

Thanks for all the helpful tips,and the warm welcome!I have now sorted the problem,or rather it sorted itself when the motor let go a few days ago!I have now fitted a nice semi-shiny replacement lump,free of rattling tappets and suspect carb problems,and the Zuk is now running happier than ever.Going to start on a few mods now,and try and get a picture sorted.Thanks again for the advice.
