Clutch Question
« on: May 23, 2006, 10:47:53 PM »
I have a 87 Sami with a SPAO and 28" tires (not big... yet) anyway my clutch seems to always work good in that I have never grind gears going from one gear to another or into reverse. Here's my predicament though the other day I was on a seriously steep hill and went to start off in first and as I let off the clutch the engine revved but the sami went nowhere and I was totally off the clutch in first gear.  Then today It happened again I was in low range stuck in some mud and thought I would start off in second to spin the mud off the tires but as I let off the clutch same thing... revving engine and no spinning tires... period. I backed it off to first and I went right off. Is this my clutch going out or maybe a throwout bearing? I'll be honest that I know nothing about clutches

check your clutch cable it may be out of adjustment. It sounds to me that the clutch is not engaging when you let the pedal up. Good luck

Have you seen the size of a samurai clutch? there real small and with larger tires and stock gears and transfer case that is normal for a stock clutch to slip like that, save up a couple hundered bucks and get a petroworks clutch in there. I think mine was like 212.00 or so. holds up behind my 122 h.p. 16 valve.

I kind of thought it might be the clutch. I have never replaced one before... do I need to drop the whole transmission out?

Yes you do have to drop the tranny.
I replaced my clutch in my track/kick about 2,000 miles ago; it was a royal pain in the but. I replaced all the u-joints while I was at it. Seeing that mine were shot. Might as well do a 1.6 litr swap if you have the funds!
Do transfer case gears also! 8)

Actually a clutch in a Sammy isn't half bad. Is it something I'd do everyday - HELL NO!

The transfer case is divorced so that makes it kinda easy. Not sure if the tracker is or isn't though. All four bolts holding the transmission in place are easy to get to. The only problem I had was removing the crossmember right underneath the tranny. The bolts were so tight but the impact gun made short work of them.

If you've never done one before, I'd have someone come over who has done one before as they can be kinda tricky to line up correctly.

I agree that if it is the cltuch, you should go with the Petroworks or Centerforce clutch. That way you never have to worry about it again.

I would check the adjustment on the cluch cable though. it might be that easy.
