Another Brake inquiry
« on: June 21, 2006, 07:28:18 PM »
Hi everyone

I'm in the process of changing the front pads on my '95 kick and I'm just wondering.  Are ALL the guide pins (with the 12mm hex bolts) supposed to be able to move ie. spring like motion .    I found my drivers side top guide pin moves but not the bottom.  And on the passenger side neither of them move.  Can't be good.  If they happen to be seized how can I remedy this.  Can I just whack it with a hammer?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Also, what would or could happen if they remained in a seized state?

They should all move, if they don't then your brakes aren't going to work very well. If you can't pull them apart then try using some penetrating oil or, as a last resort some heat on the casting. Give them a good clean up and repack with grease before reassembling. You might want to put some new pads in at the same time, the old ones are likely to have worn uneven.

Thanks for the reply and info.  I can just pull/peel down the rubber boots without worry right?

Ok, I'm in a bit of a dilemna.  The drivers side guide pin is seized and I can't get it out. I tried lubing it and hammering it out but it's REALLY stuck.  Any ideas?

Did you try soaking it in some penetrating oil?  We use Kroil for the really stubborn bolts that have seazed themself up and it seems to work pretty well.
