What do I need the ECU for now?
« on: July 27, 2006, 07:03:51 PM »
I was looking in the garage sale and a post I saw sparked my curiosity. I have the weber carb. What do I need the ECU for now? Does it serve any other purpose besides hitachi control? What about the wiring? Can I scrap it? My sensor light is on most the time but goes off breifly at certain r.p.m.s and engine loads. Is this ECU causing this because it misses it's hitachi partner? If I get rid of it will I no longer get other sensor warnings not related to the hitachi?

Hitachi ?  Is that the maker of the old carb ?
The ECU might have some guage interfaces,
but I doubt it, but there is no real reason to
rip out the ECU, you my have to replace the
Weber with a stock carb in Moab and need it.

The ECU does a lot of communicating with the Samurai's stock Hitachi carburetor in order to make it operate at optimum gas mileage and emission generation levels.  A look at the Samurai electrical wiring diagram in the Factory Service Manual or any of the aftermarket repair manuals will indicate this.

This does not mean that an aftermarket carburetor will not allow the vehicle to pass emission tests in most jurisdictions that require strict emission levels in order to pass inspection.  Some places may require only OEM intake equipment in order to pass emission tests.

If you live in a state or metropolitan area that requires emission testing and your Samurai is licenced to drive on the public roads, then I would not rip out the wiring and I would keep the Hitachi carb ready to re-install should your Weber not meet emission standards under any condition.

Besides, it's a lot of work and the wiring isn't going to hurt anything by sitting disconnected.  Mine has been laying in the engine compartment unused since 2001.

I'd leave it all there but disconnect the ECU, that should get rid of the warning light.

Ok. thanks. I just like a clean look in the engine as my previous posts would indicate. I have cleaned it and fixed leaks and cleaned it and fixed more leaks etc... I think I gottem now.  Maybe I can tuck the wires away. Adam
