1998 2-dr Sidekick "AirBag" Light on

I've got an Air Bag dash light on in my 1998 2-dr Sidekick. 

I've got to make corrections to get an inspection.

Anyone else run into this issue...   Air bag computer, Clock Spring, other?

step # 1 ........ remove instrument cluster

step #2 ......... unplug "airbag" light bulb

step #3 ........ reinstall intrument cluster


you are finished!

always works for those pesky "check engine" lights ;D

The bad news is that the car is ruined and can't be used anymore.  I will help you out by giving you $500 for your trouble and take the bad vehicle off your hands.  If it is an auto 4X4 2dr soft top with good underbody and trans and good exaust and lockouts.

Really though be careful what you do to try to remedy the problem.  If it is just to pass an ispection I guess the bulb trick would work but I have seen and heard stories of guys trying to do home made repairs and setting off the system by mistake.  Not good.

UUUUmm  No!   ::)

As I was told, OBDII is smarter then that.  

A missing bulb will trip the CEL.   Besides I'd like to keep my Air Bags legal & functional as it might be my life or my wife's they are saving.  

+ A sharp inspector will look for the light at start up (on 2 sec, then off).

For now, my litte computer has an appointment with a bigger computer this evening.  

I have been performing Air Bag work for 5+ years, I have not yet invested in diagnostic capabilities.  I am familure with the systems and associated safety percautions with AirBag system service

Currently it is a 2-dr 4wd Conv Auto 4.30:1  on 33x9.50-15 BFG's  with  2" Spacers with 2" Fender trim
I've got a 2" body lift, 5.125:1 gears and 35's + a few other custom goodies in the works.

For what it's worth, mine was on all the time on my 96 Zuki. When I replaced the instrument cluster I removed the airbag light and it has not set the CEL. I'll probably at least have mine diagnosed if I start using it on the road. If it isn't cost prohibitive I'll probably get it fixed.

The shops Scan tool will not read Suzuki Body codes  ::).

I've gotta pay to have it read or pull and check individual components.

I've got the radio out so I'll pull the computer and check it first, Next will be the clock spring.  Clock spring gets used every day you drive it and is a wear item.

It will cost me $80 to get is scanned, I figure i might can buy a used clock spring and a computer for 1/2 that.

before you shell out $80 hold on... I have the service manual and it looks like there is a diagnostic terminal to check & clear it with a jumper wire... see if your airbag wiring harness matches one of the diagrams in the attached

Thanks Sapien  ;)

        I will check mine out.  I know the air bag indicator for my 98 is Lower right, but harness and diagnostics might  be similar.  I did pull up some info on Mitchell On Demand, It gave similar code info but insisted that the codes be pulled by a (tech1 I think) scanner.

the pages I snipped out for the 1st image showed both ways to do it, Tech-1 or no Tech-1.  hope it works!

I've got codes:

12  Normal

19  Short to power circuit  (Passenger SRS)

25  Short to power circuit  (Driver SRS)

71  SDM internal fault        (Bad Computer)


Smells like a bad computer  :( :) :(

I find a it strange that they do not list a code for the clock spring...

I'd guess that will show as an Open in drivers SRS circuit.

is the clock spring what they call "contact coil assembly" -- it's mentioned in the troubleshooting pages for codes 21-25

and you're right, all it says for code 71 is to replace the airbag computer.
