Hey Bobzuki, umm just one more thing (in the voice of Columbo)  Did you use 10- 30 the whole time or did you use 5-30, or both?  Thanks again,  Dave ;D

Used both - 5W30 in cold weather, and 10W30 in warm weather - now, it's 5W30 all the time!!!  Oh, and she's up to 123,000 miles, and still no timing chain sounds!

Well, that's good.  I guess it's a lot of highway miles huh?  How bad did the noise get before you realized that you had to change the tensioners?  Mine hasn't made the noise for a week now.  And how long do you think it can go with them on their way out?   Thanks,   Dave ;D

Well, not exactly highway miles...  It's not city miles either - twisty little roads up and down the mountains - HARD driving - about 70 miles a day.

It got pretty noticable, before we did anything about it - and it's not like I think the chain would ever break, or jump a tooth - maybe just get sloppy, and give you some "shift" in your valve timing.  But then I'm not sure.  I'm pretty sure though that the V6 is an interference engine - if you break a chain, you probably WILL put a valve through the top of a piston...

I know we're getting a little off the original, but to answer the first post, I used to have an oil consumption problem (1-1.5 qts/3000 miles) until I switched to the Castrol extended life dino juice. Now I'm down to about .5 to .75 per 3000 miles. I'm convinced it made a difference in my trucklet; anyone else have the same/different results?  In addition, what's the concensus on 10-40 in an engine with 140,000 miles on the original engine?  Average use is 85 miles per day commuting, mostly at highway speeds (55-65 MPH) and a warmer climate (SC).
                                 Thanks,  Bubbazuki

Oh yeah, the original question......  Hey, the timing chain thing got me off my short little attention span ::).  Now, I use regular Castrol and a Purolater oil filter (Never did answer THAT question before either)  Is that a partial synthetic???   Thanks,  Dave

Funny you should mention that.  My Dad bought Valvoline ONCE, back in the early seventies when I was a kid.  He said it ruined the cam in his 73 Chevy Pickup with a 350.  Don't know if it really did or not, but he blamed it on that and never bought it again.  Me neither.  The reason I got Castrol was when I first met my wife about 13 years ago her dad only used it.  They had two Ford Festivas, (remember them??)  Just basic 4 cyl 4 speed (nope, not even a five speed) and that's all he used, sometimes he'd go 6 or7000 miles between oil changes, and those things still ran good..   I was sold, and I've used it ever since, never had a problem really either.   ;D
