I just had my engine rebuilt on my 97 Tracker and I just got finished putting it in the vehicle and it wont start. It ran before I pulled it, it just had a rod knocking. The only way I can make it do anything now is that I hold the accelerator to the floor and turn the motor over. It will sort of fire up for about 3-5 seconds and then it dies. I have to hold the pedal to the floor or it will not ever try to crank. Has anyone else had this problem? Its not the computer because I put another one on there and it did the same thing, and I have worked with the timing and it still does the same thing. Thanks for the help.

Make sure that you have the main earth between the engine and gearbox connected. If it doesn't turn over unless the pedal is on the floor then it could be earthing through the throttle cable. THIS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE 

Everything is connected, but I think maybe it is the crank positioning sensor. I can unplug it and the vehicle does the same thing as if it was plugged in. That would explain why it sounds out of time when it does "sort of" crank.

The CPS wouldn't prevent it from cranking and unplugging it would put the ECU into back up mode. If you have some jump leads then try connecting one between the battery ground and the inlet manifold. A bad earth will prevent it from cranking properly and throw all the EFI sensor readings out.
If the earth is OK then maybe the battery is suspect?

I finally figured it out. Damned Haynes Manual said to time the engine on the #1 cylinder, but your supposed to use the #4. Had to call Rick at Hawks Suzuki to figure it out. Real nice guy if anyone needs suzuki information or parts.

Hahaha. Sorry, that's not funny. Please do yourself(and others) a favor and pour gasoline on the haynes manual and burn it, then dispose of the ashes in a Lake or Ocean. The haynes manual is just wrong, almost like it was written about a volkswagon.
