My car died again :(
« on: December 23, 2006, 03:58:23 PM »
so my car is a 91 geo tracker i have had trouble before not sure if anyone even remembers me though lol

specs are 91 5spd 8v 4cyl

i had trouble with the cat before so i used a broom to clean up that for the time being since i only drive the car very few days a month (im now a truck driver so im only home 3-4 days a month)

anyways i was sitting in a drive thru cars running fine i take the car outa gear let off the clutch car dies :( i try to start it and it cranks and cranks but thats it

now what i had the problem with my cat the car would kinda crank crank crank boom crank crank crank crank boom boom. kinda like that now theres no boom

i took out a spark plug wire and checked for spark it was bright enough to see in the sun light so i belive spark is fine... so im wondering if anyone has had this problem before. also im wondering if it could be the timing belt or something now :(

any help would be very welcome right now its sitting about 2 miles from home in a parking lot and im tempted to leave it there..sigh

One problem that happened twice to me was the fuel pump.It dies suddenly. For example the truck was fine, everything ok.Both times,it happened as I stopped to buy something from a store. When I got back to the truck and tried to start the engine, the motor was not turning on.Sparks ok,but when I inspected with a polymeter the pumb it was not pumping fuel.I replace it an problem solved.

ok so i looked into it a little more and it wassent flooded lol

had to tow it home :( sigh. but i checked the fuel at the pressure regulator under the hood and it pumps a stream of gas so the pump still works

i went into it more and found out that the gas was not making it onto the butterfly at all so i took out the injector and cleaned it. it sprayed gas like alot of gas not sure if that is normal and i got the car to fire up but it soon was flooded and died :(

now its back to not putting any gas onto the butterfly again so whats wrong? can the fuel injector go out intermittently (wow i cant spell right now) also could it be the pressure regulator is pushing to much gas?

i have never dealt with any of this stuff before so im not sure where to start

Retire it over a computer? Buy a used one and plug it in. My sister put one in a tracker she bought in the guys driveway and drove it home, its not that hard. I know someone repairs them for a couple hundred dollars. Mabey petroworks? 91 huh... The rockstar was a 91. Find out if your computer has a one green and one white conector. If you do PM me. Your computer is located behind your left speaker and is silver in color.

it should look like this.

There is a member on the Zuwharrie BBS that repairs them for less than that, his handle is "Surly". He's fixed many for the members there and they've all been satisfied.  In the 90-93 years, there are crappy capicitors that leak after time, and cause problems. They all do it in time(depending on climate), so replacing it with another could lead to the same problems down the road. Here are a couple pictures I took of some board corrosion where the fuel pump cap is.

and the gas in the tank is fine i checked that in hopes thats all it was. i also found out that the injector isnt working at all what i thought was it working was just some left over gas and carb cleaner down the carb so now sure if that changes things at all

ill be gone for a few weeks so when i get back ill let you guys know what fixed it =-)
