I paid 400 for my 96 tracker and have put 45,000 miles on it.  Where is the mud bog at in Michigan?

This could be a real long shot but I had a montero that had the pulley on the crankshaft come loose and strip out the keyway. It ran fine but was loud. Made a banging like you're describing.

Have you looked under the hood to see if anything is wobbling around under the hood?

You might be able to find a used mill cheap at the salvage yard(most of the "U-Pull-It" places here in Colorado sell mostly complete 4-bangers for like $80). If not, you can get a rebuilt longblock pretty cheap from lots of places, or just a short block if your head is ok.

Rocky-road offers a rebuild kit for like $370 and you could take the block to a machine shop and get it bored or honed whatever it needs and all the new bearings put in. The engine rebuild would be a good learning experience and plus you could say that YOU rebuilt the engine. here is the link for the rock-road engine rebiuld kit.
