I've had what I thought was a funky relay for a while now, and it was a problem only during either warm weather, over 85F ambient, or within ten minutes of shutting the engine off.
Warm wasn't a problem...but we've been in Vegas for two years and it's gotten more temperature sensitive, i.e. lower temps affect it. It's already been warm enough to make it require a dozen turns of the key to turn over and this gets old. I won't mention how creative I get with language should I kill it during traffic. This sheet metal isn't deflecting a .32 caliber bullet much less a 9MM or .45.
It was time for belts & hoses, so I did those last week. It went well besides me wanting to smack the guy who "designed" the A/C & PS belt tensioner. Idiot.
When looking at the starter, and after trying to remove it last year, it was obvious the alternator must be moved, not necessarily removed, for room enough to access the terminal on the back of the solenoid. Fine, this time is as good as any.
I yank the starter, take it to a rebuild place here in town, get it back, put it in, and whadda know, the same problem is there, though at least when it cranks, it's both faster and better-sounding. I neglected to mark the solenoid to ensure it was replaced, as I said, "it needs a new solenoid" at least three times when dropping it off. Guy even said they put one on when I picked it up. However, this is Vegas, land of rolling the dice....
Could it be related to the ignition switch in the column, somewhere? I know I need to check to make certain the signal wire at the solenoid is getting power, but we're moving Wednesday, so I'm reluctant to dig into something which is currently mobile, if you have enough patience.
Ideas?
