installing rear bumper w/ 3" body
« on: December 09, 2004, 03:55:25 AM »
Ok so I have installed the 3" body lift from Calmini and all is well but here is the issue. I cannot figure out how to reattach the rear bumper and cover. I may be dim but the instructions say to redrill the lower holes and attach. A friend and I sat looking at that for 1/2 hour and cant see any way for their instructions to work. Has anybody reattached the rear bumper and cover with the three inch lift that can enlighten me??

I did the same thing, If you look in the kit, there will be the pieces you are supposed to weld in for support. If you look at them some will have holes drilled in them. Take the top bolts out of the rear bumper and put the spacers in and bolt it back together.

So did you have to grind off the lower tabs and built in mud flap supports? We were thinking of just blocking it up but the lower part of the bumper looks as if it needs a lot of modification to make it work.

I didn't raise my bumper cause i didn't need the covers cause it would just get bashed to hell. Another thing you have to mess with is your exhaust, it will hit the mudflaps on the bumper cover. I ground the mudfap supports off cause they were mashed anyway.

sidekick right  ?   i reinstalled the bumper and cover mine was a 97   you have to use the rectangular spacers with a hole at each end . bolt them to the frame .set the bumper on top of them bolt bumper on . redrill the 2 bottom bumper holes into the rear crossmember . use self tapping screws , done. reattach the cover  , done  thats how i did my 4 dr 1997 sidekick

I agree ... ditch the cover, slice off misc pieces of metal used to mount the cover, give the bare bumber a shot of rattle can, done.

I'm "finishing" mine as we speak (grinding here, cutting there) ... I'm goin to use leftover herculiner as a "finish", but flat black woulda worked.

Yes it is a 95 2 dr Sidekick, Sorry. I am not so concerned with the cover other than on the sides. Without the cover they look like something is missing. Mabye it will grow on me I would have ordered Calminis bumper but it didnt curve around and cover the sides I might have to try my hand at bumper making. I will have to try and finish up this weekend.
I bent the tranny shifter but it is too straight and it hits the dash in the upper shifts but any less bend and the stick hits the sheet metal on the lower shifts do I have to open the sheet metal a little or is it just a precise angle to fit nicely?. Any tricks to getting the boots to fit? So far messing with them last night they look like they wont bolt to the floor anymore.

I sprayed the steel bumper core with
a good quality undercoating, it's tough
and is easy to touch up should some
rocks or some bushes happen to get in the
way.  As far as the sides, at first they
look ugly, but that's the paint color, shoot
it with some black undercoating or some
truck bed liner and it starts to look like
it belongs there, if the holes really bother
you, you could take out the tail lights and
put a patch of metal glued down with some
silicone over the hole and bondo the outside,
then paint or spray with black, now it looks
more finished.

The bumpers will never cover the sides again,
ditch the cover, the only option is to cut the
flap where the screws went thu into the body,
off, do a nice straight line, now get some nice
looking head screws, drill thru the cover into
the bumper and install the screws, cover attached
but the sides will still be bare

The mud flaps on the cover will get cought on
everything, and hold lots of mud too, but if you
have over zealous police, you might need to put
the cover back on in place of mud flaps.

I like the look of the cover myself.  I think I ended up fabing my own bumper mounts.  I also had to cut out a section and weld in a patch for the full size spair (32 x 11.5) tire.

Because of the hight, hitch,  a releaf angle from the tires to the bumper cover, I've never had a problem.  And I've been down a couple spots where you had to tie off to someone to keep from endowing over the nose.

Good luck.

I don't know. I kind've liked the bumper cover on. Kind've gave it a stocker/cleaner/lighter (with out the HEAVYduty rear bumper) look and thats with the body lift and 31s.
you can always trim the bottom of the mudflaps off where it traps mud.

I have a freind that reworked is stock tire mount to fit his 32" MTRs and canceled his Heavy bumper.
but then again thats my thought on the bumper cover ;D

I kept the stock bumpers on my lwb, as i think they look neater than heavy duty steel ones.
Just made new mounts for them and tucked the winch under the bottom of the front bumper.
looks almost stock if you squint in the dark. lol
