time to fix this leak before it blows up!
« on: May 27, 2007, 04:27:08 PM »
My 86 samurai transmission is  leaking like crazy since my 1000 mile trip so I may as well rebuild it since some dude keeps buying all the good ones off of ebay.  (I think he may be trying to create a shortage so he can sell
 his own rebuilts--A-Hole!)

I was told my transmission was a petro or calimini transmission that was just put in a few months back for 795.00  by the previous owner. I'm thinking he lied through his teeth. It's howling now, unless it's the transfer case. I can't imagine it leaking so soon after the rebuild. It either starts near the front or is coming right out between the two halves. I don't think it's the output shaft seal alone.

Is there a write up somewhere on rebuilding  the transmission or transfer case? What is used to seal the two halves of the transmission? I think they both leak. Also, are the common rebuild kit's on ebay any good?  I see petroworks has a tranny rebuild kit for $180.00+ yet the ones on ebay are only  80.00 + shipping and include the syncros. Transfer case rebuild kits on ebay are around 70.00 but are the parts cheaply made? I can't decide weather to rebuild the transfer case or just replace the input shaft seal and the two output shaft seal and see how it does. Maybe add the slop shift fix. I would need to drop it to put the seals in so may be worth just rebuilding it while I have it down?

I have some cheap harbor freight gear pullers and standard tools (wrenches sockets etc.) but I don't have an arbor press. I'm worried I may take it apart on a saturday and not be able to finish the work due to lack of some critical tools.

Sorry for the wordiness. I'm lucky to get a two day weekend so I have to plan my time wisely. I want to order what ever rebuild kit I need asap so when I do get a two day weekend I can get this done quick.

As always, Any suggestions appreciated.

at least let me know if I need access to an h frame press, arbor press, what size press and what tonnage please. Also, Can I get by with the cheap pullers or can I do all the pressing and pulling with a press? l

Anyone?

I have yet to do a transmision but the transfer case's are easy with a small 12 ton press and a small clam shell, if your press is smaller you can allways use heat to help with just a small propane torch, the new bearings you could put in the oven at say 200 deg. and then put them in, and if they still wont go put the shaft's in the fridge over night before pressing them on with a hot bearing.

This clam shell you mention, is it one of the adapter plates for the press? If I were to rent a larger press, would the bearings go right on? Will the same press do the removal as well? Will one of the bench top presses work? How long of a stroke will it neeed? Maybe you can insert a picture of a good press to use and I will see if the rental shop has one. Thanks.

As far as the transmission goes, It would be great to know how to rebuild one correctly since they are notorious for howling. I'll keep looking into that. Worst case, I just get a core to experiment on.

The clam shell slips under the bearing (two piece with bolts going through it)and goes against the press or you can screw all thread into it for pulling a bearing off with a puller, the desk top should be fine, you only need about an inch or so of stroke for pressing them on, the bearings look real close to the size of t case ones.

Are you sure that you don't mean to put the shaft in the oven and the bearings in the fridge?
A fairly knowledgeable  maintenance guy where I work says that a 1 ton press should be sufficient for small bearings like this. Maybe you said small 12 ton and meant 1/2 ton? What do you think. I need to do my u-joints anyways so I may just buy one but want one that will do all I need it to do without being overkill.

Heat makes steel expand (larger)and freezing it shrinks it, so when you get the bearings off to go on easyer freez the shaft and heat the bearing and it should slip on by hand(wearing a glove, lol) my table top is an 8 ton I think but my buddies is a home made 12 ton using a porta power inside an I beam frame, works good.

Just seems that heating the bearings would make them loose their grease or damage them somehow unless the only grease they are getting is from the gear lube?

I remember seeing some place that like 1994 and newer transmissions had sealed bearings and maybe x-fer cases, 200 deg is not going to hurt the steel at all, thats the first click on my oven, if food does not burn the bearing should be fine,LOL
