There is a "c" channel setup in there that some kind of a plastic square bushing rides up and down in to let the window go up and down. The channel is metal, and over time, it gets enlarged/elongated, so the window slips front to back, then gets stuck in the corner above the mirror while trying to wind it up. That's why hold it back while you wind it up tends to work. That bushing has more movement than it's supposed to now because the either the bushing itself is worn out, or generally the channel is stretched.
I've heard of some people taking out that channel and squeezing it back tighter again in a vice and/or reinforcing it (weld some support to it on the backside of the channel), so it's a lot more snug against that plastic bushing i was talking about.
Your other option is to buy a brand new window regulator.
