Mileage out of 1.6 8V Engine
« on: June 18, 2005, 07:54:00 PM »
Hey all, I was kind of curious after reading some of the other posts, what kind of mileage do most people get out of the 1.6L engines before they die?  I've have seen anywhere from 84k to 240k.  Thanks

mine is sittting at 257k and that is after the oil pump quit on me and the motor seized 8k miles ago, managed to work it loose and replace the pump and still is running good(as can be considered)

You've got to be kidding me :o  That is a great! It sounds like the 1.6L is a stout little motor compared to the 1.3L in the Sami.

Nope not kidding although as much as she leaks you would think the motor is more of a strainer than a motor heh but still cranks up every time. And still has enough power to pull 31's to 75mph with stock gears

Oh yeah and praise be to PB Blaster spray, its what i filled the cylinders with to break it loose when it seized :)

One of the killers of 1.6s (and 1.3s for that matter) are the teenage (& other first-time automobile owners) who seriously neglect to keep oil in the engine.

Every unwrecked Samurai or TracKick that I have come across in a salvage yard seems to have a broken block from a thrown rod which, I believe, is caused by running the engine dry....

i'm a firm believer in preventative maintenence. we see so many vehicles in the shop that dont get serviced on a regular basis and those are the ones that blow up before 200k. my bmw has 322000km and runs like it was brand new. like i say "love your suki and it will love you". our sidekick has 210,000 km and runs very good with no funny noises.

My black Tracker has around 68k and has a funny problem with backfiring before it reaches operating temperature. Other than that, it runs like a champ. Just regular oil changes, and tuneups once in a while :)

147000 miles on mine, fixed the oil leaks as routine maintenance (front seal and distributor O Ring), then replaced the rear seal when I had the tranny off before it started leaking. She's a daily driver |removethispart|@ 42 miles each way and I get 26 MPG with 30's on stock gears.  I use about 3/4 qt between oil changes (3K miles) and I cannot see any appreciable smoke when I start her.

I had 380000 on my sami before i rolled it and it ran like a champ. My kick has a 100000 on it and it out runs almost every four cylinder out there. But its a 1.8. I put around 30k a year on it since i bought it one year ago at 72000. And last but not least my xl7 runs great a 1000 miles on it. Not even broke in  ;D

89 Kick 8V; Had over 275,000 Miles on it when her heart gave out. Now with after a transplans she is on the road again.

98 X-90 16V: Had 160,000 on it when a bold backed out og the harmonic balancer trashing the Key on my Crank but was still running fine when that happned.

97 Geo Tracker 16V: 115,000 Miles on it and the motor being put into the X-90 till I can ge the crank fixed. It's still running fine with no smoke or oil usage.

If you take average care of these motors you can easily get 200,000 miles out of them with just a little maitnance.

Constant revving from a first time stick driver can also be the death of them.  I've now moved on to a 16V and have found so far that my biggest enemy is cooling.  Realredwagon has had similar issues, but my 1.3 and Realredsammi's 8V did not, so your biggest killer is lack of oil and Hagen's slogan "red line all the time"
